    Hi there,
Planning on buying a new PC, should I buy a name brand or is it better to have one built.
I will be using it for backing up my dvd collection.
I already have a laptop w/dvd burner not a good choice for dvd burning.
    Thank you

Get one built.. If you can't do it or dont know anyone that can visit your local ma & pops computer store. You will get much more bang for the buck!

If you have no luck with that then get a system from a online custom built PC maker here are a few you can check out
    http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv
    http://www.krex.com/
    http://store.yahoo.com/directron/
    http://www.computergate.com/
They all will build a system to your specifications.

If you have to buy one in the store then go with HP, ACER, or ABS stay away from Gatewy and Dell IMO.. You will get exactly what you pay for with them..

    Cheers

Being as I've had this Dell Dimension 8200 for around 3 years now, I can honestly say, get a Dell. I've had absolutely zero problems with it and will buy another one someday. I've built my own and bought other brands before and will as I say buy another Dell when the time comes.

Hi everyone... This pc that I just bought is a Dell 4700, and I'm very impressed with it. It came with a Philips dual layer burner, but it crapped out and wouldn't read anything. Dell mailed me a new, unopened retail version of the Plextor 716A and it is working perfectly. I've since learned that the Philips burner has been very problematic, and Dell is not hesitating to replace the bad Philips burners that customers ordered. I was lucky as I had a choice of which replacement burner I wanted; so I chose the Plex.
I also ordered the digital flat panel monitor, and the high-end video card / graphics stuff too. Turned out to be a great decision as my monitor is far superior than what I could have imagined. If you do get one, make sure you connect it via the dvi connection... at first I made the mistake and connected it via the analog connection. It was only when I contacted Dell customer support about my Philips burner problem that I discovered that I was supposed to connect it via dvi and not analog... I felt like an idiot, lol.
I'm kind of new, as you can maybe tell.... Hope this info might be useful to you. Good luck with your decision and purchase.

Don't get me wrong the average user will be happy with a Dell, and those of us that fix and build computers for a living will love for you to buy a Dell also ;-) lots to fix on them and we get your money :) Point blank they are made with the cheapest parts possible unless you upgrade and then you nd up spending a fortune..

    cheers

Here is a comparison that could help you out :)
The first picture is a Dell Dimension 3000

The second is a much better pc custom built with parts from newegg notice the better video, sound, mother board SATA HD(bigger too) and SATA DVD burner.. and you save $500 :) so now which is better?

Jeez mayo, did u get fired from dell or what. If dell didn't use cheap parts they wouldn't be able to sell a starter pc 4 $299. Yes I do have a dell. I haven't had any problems until I started trying to play certain games. But the ? was what would be a good pc for backing up movies. I have a dicontinued series of dell and have burned over 500 movies without having to replace one part. Yes, I would like and prefer to build a pc in the future, but do u really think u need to build one just to burn movies?

Sooner or later you will have to get a computer with SATA hard drive connections because IDE will be fazed out.Just like AGP will be fazed out with PCI Express. That's what the stores are telling me.

Just don't buy one with celeron or sempron. These are cheap end proccessors.I personally am building one myself.I wouldn't go to a mom and pop store because the will rob you blind. It's not to hard to build one.The reason I am building one is because I want name brand parts in my machine and for gaming. My board supports AMD 64.Can't wait for the AMD 64 Dual Core.Of course you may spend more building one in some cases other than going out and buying one.But any basic computer with a burner will make a movie just fine.

I have is 5 Dells PCs, for me they are the best, Gateway HP, ACER, or ABS are junk to some but not to all, like me I get them (Dell) with the DVD player and DVD burnerand 2-120 GB hard drives each. so I can go DVD to DVD I also have and like the Dell laser printer 3100, it has all the add on, one printer 5 PCs, . Dell is a good PC you do have to know what you what and what you are going to use it for.

That go’s for software as wall. don’t buy the 321 software as 321 is out of buss or just buy software check it out

If some one has Xmaker or some other of the 321 software remove it and junk it all out. All I use is the Groove Mechanic 2.5b, DVD Shrink 3.2, Studio Version 9 card and Nero, SureThing CD Labeler Deluxe 4 I put a lot of VHS on DVDs. As will as 33, 45, and 78 rpm on CDs with labels on them and in a DVD case. I do a lot of printing

PPS OK so I have over $2000 in each of the 5 PC and $3000 in one Dell laser printer3100 50,000 pages befor I need to buy ink

    hi

@ bbmayo - i see you slipped the sata plextor in on your second custom picture = nice....

@ akyllonen - the dual core are for sale now!

my first computer was from a shop i was ripped off big time! but when we got it i knew nothing of computers, infact i asked the setup guy who came to the house, how do i turn the pc on??? hehehe...

so that did it for me, i read about pc's and read more and more, and learnt to build and overclock pc's from the bios up! from here www.overclockers.com, this pc i am on now is my 5th i built myself. i am just working out my 6th with as mentioned a dual core and as mentioned DUAL sata raid amongst other stuff...

    but all good advice above...
