I have an interesting problem...for some reason my Devil May Cry backup will not load properly as NTSC. This is Devil May Cry 1. I use swap magic 3.6 with slide tool. When I load the backup, it opens the game ok, the capcom sign goes up, then it gets to a screen where it says some warning about the game having violence and stuff in it. It freezes there. My original plays fine on the ps2 so I'm confused about this. This is my first encounter with a problem like this. I use dvd decrypter to rip and burn my games. However, I have tried downloading Devil May Cry...I inadvertantly downloaded a Pal version, and under Pal it is able to get past the "warning: violence blah blah" page. What do I need to do to fix this? Any response is appreciated. I wrote this little paragraph rather sloppily so let me know if I need to fix it so it's understandable.

    Thanks.

Apparently my first post was incomprehensible. So I'll reiterate in a cleaner fashion:

    Devil May Cry 1

Original Disc (NTSC) - works fine

Ripped and burned disc (NTSC) - Freezes at "Warning: this game man contain violence/gore etc" page

Downloaded and burned dvd (NTSC) - Freezes at "warning: etc, etc" screen

Downloaded and burned dvd (PAL) - Works, but since it's Pal, it's all colorless and flickering and such. When I try to load this disc as NTSC it freezes at the "warning" page.

My system is NTSC. I'm not understanding why my backed up NTSC disc won't work. I use swap magic 3.6. Thanks for any response.

Because of the region, it won't display properly, so you will have to patch the region, PM me with your email address for the tool. And I think you need better media for those games. Look at the - Games stuttering and skipping or just not booting up at all?

I'm having the exact same problem as hypp0crit. I'll use this template I found elsewhere, in case it helps:

Name of Game - Devil May Cry
    Game Region - NTSC
    Media Make - 1)Memorex & 2)Maxell
    Media ID - 1)RICOHJPN-R03-04 & 2)ProdiscF02
Disc Max Speed - 1)16x & 2)16x (but only burns at 2x on my burner)
    Speed of Burning - 2-2.4x
PS2 Modification - Swap Magic 3.6 + Swap Tool Pro
    PS2 Version - v12
    Rebuilt - No
    Rebuilding Software - N/A
Burning Software - DVD Decrypter & ImgBurn

The DMC backup freezes at the violence & gore warning screen. I have tried burning 3 copies, once on PRODISC -R media, and twice on RICOHJPN +R media (which works flawlessly for a dozen other games I have backed up recently). I'm going to pick up some Verbatim +R discs later this afternoon (and hope they aren't CMC), and see if that makes a difference. Anything else I could/should try?

    yours is def the media

    RICOHJPN-R03

    you will get away with

the prodisk utter crap use for film or anything apart from your ps2

    boobooman

also if you are using 16x disks on 2x writer you are going to have problems use some 4X and burn at 2X

dose those prodisk have a smily face on them

Actually, my writer is 8x compatible, as far as I can tell. I just assumed that burning at the lowest possible speed would reduce the chance of errors.

The prodisc media does not have little smiley faces on it, as far as I can tell. They have the Maxell logo, DVD-R, information about the size and speed rating, and the image of a dude sitting on a couch with a wine glass tipping over, which is the standard Maxell image. Why did you think there would be a smiley face, and what would be the significance of it?

Well, the store on campus was out of the DVD's on sale, so I had to order them online. Verbatim DVD+R's, 8x compatible. They should be arriving tomorrow, so I'll post an update once I've had a chance to try them.

because i brought a pack of 16x disks hat were prodisc and they had a big orange smily face on (for the kids) it was a mixed batch half pro disk half mmc the mmc were great but the prodisc the audio would get stuck but the ps" loved them ive never heard it be as quite as with these disk not even an orginal lol

anyway those verbs shoud be fine if 8x burn at 4x and you should be fine

I tried it on burning Devil May Cry (NTSC) also and it doesn´t work.

It freezes at the explicit violence and gore warning.

I burned it with DVD Decrypter at 1x in a TDK dvd-r ID: TTH02

I saw in a best media thread and this dvds were in first place, and i doubt theres actually no way of burning dmc ntsc.

Is there a patch of some sort or something??? =D

ps: I have already played a lot of burned ntsc games in my ps2 with no problem and i use SwapMagic 3.6 too

My DVD's arrived today! A 50 pack of Verbatim DVD+R's, for $18.99 CAD. Stuck a disc into my drive, opened up DVD Decrypter, and was pleased to see a disc id of MCC-004. So far, so good.

First, I wanted to test the discs. I grabbed FF-X-2 off my shelf, ripped it using DVD Decrypter, and burnt a copy onto a MCC disc. To my amusement, the backup copy actually booted faster than the original. Go figure.

Now for the true test. I loaded the DMC mds into DVD Decrypter, and burnt a copy onto an MCC disc at 4x. It burnt and verified with no errors. Did the whole swap magic load thing, it loaded, got to the Explicit violence warning screen, and... continued! On to a blank screen, where it stayed for a good 30 seconds, at which point I figured it had frozen and shut off the PS2. I decided to try again, but this time I used the Special Boot option in Swap Magic. Everything loaded, explicit violence screen appeared, disappeared, and... the main menu loaded! In my excitement, I shut off the PS2 and ran here to post. Then I thought I'd better actually see if I could start a new game and play. Loaded swap magic, swapped discs, did special boot... and it froze at the blank screen after the explicit violence warning. Shut it down, tried again, and this time it loaded the main menu after a 15 second delay (longer than the first time it loaded). I was able to start a new game, and after the ridiculously long un-skippable cutscene, I was able to run around, jump and swing my sword. Whee!

My conclusion: DMC seems to be a very finnicky game to load, perhaps because of its large size. The DMC image I have is 4.69Gb, and according to the PS2 TOC List elsewhere on this forum, DMC is tied for largest single-layer TOC size. A combination of top-quality media and luck seem to be the key ingrediants to making it work.

Another reason for it freezing, may the be the fact that you are using DVD+R instead of DVD-R! PS2s prefer minus!

Actually, the NTSC version *does* work, at least the one I acquired. As you would see if you bothered to read my post.

As for +R vs -R, I have had much better luck so far with +R on my PS2, both with game backups and movies. Perhaps they changed the laser type with the new slimline consoles?

I did, but what´s the point in playing a game that crashes 50% of the time?

I would rather patch it to PAL

I thought I'd post one last update. As of my last post, my NTSC DMC has loaded 100% of the time using normal boot with Swap Magic 3.6. It seems that quality media does, in fact, help. Who knew? :)

On that note, I found http://gearlog.com/blogs/gearlog/archive/2006/05/16/11622.aspx to be very interesting. Ignoring the controversial Blu-ray stuff, if you look at the pictures, you'll notice a recordable DVD. A Verbatim DVD+R, to be exact. This means I am using the unofficial disc of choice of Sony employees to be used on Sony equipment. How sweet is that?

I mentioned that 19 days ago, and you see? It does help. High quality is needed for next to every game if you want to play it flawlessly.
