In a nutshell, booktyping allows us to change the disc to read as a DVD-ROM (Instead of DVD+ or -). And having a disc booktyped DVD-ROM allows for maximum compatability. In otherwords, it will play in any DVD player where a DVD+ or - might not. It is important to note that DVD-R media does NOT support booktyping. If your burner supports booktyping, I would defintely purchase quality DVD+R media. If your burner does not support booktyping, then you are better off with DVD-R media. Of course the above depends on your application. But if you want to backup movies, booktype them to DVD-ROM.
The DVD(dash)R is an offspring of the DVD Forum supported by Pioneer who developed the media in early 2000. The DVD(plus)R is much newer and is an offspring of the DVD Alliance whose members are Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha and others. Presently the DVD(dash)R is compatible with about 80% of all players and the DVD(plus)R only 65% ; but this is changing fast as newer players are replacing the older ones on the market.It is expected that by the end of 2006 , this will be completely reversed. Advantages of the DVD(Plus)R are :- ~~Better for long term storage because of the composition it has. ~~supports bitsetting. ~~faster writing speed are possible -- up to 24X as of now.
