I was wondering what the difference is. Because it seems like it would be cheaper to buy the M3 SD with passkey 2 instead of buying the M3 SD standalone and passcard.

The Passkey1 only works on very old DS's which have firmware 3 or lower. The Passkey2 was released when the newer firmwares came out stopping the Passkey1 from working.

To see what firmware you have, do the following:

    1. Insert a DS or GBA game in its slot.
    2. Turn on your DS (hold Select + Start if your DS is configured to auto-start the game)
    3. Start Pictochat, and go to Room A.
    4. Now remove the game (don't worry, this doesn't harm the game).
    5. Both screens should turn the same color:
FW1: DS will freeze, when you remove the cart
    FW2: Grayish Blue
    FW3: Dark Green
    FW4: Yellow
    FW5: Magenta
    FW6: Blue
    iQue FW: Dark Green
    DSLite FW: Purple
    FlashME (all versions): Dark Green

If you have firmware 4 (yellow) or higher you need a Passkey2

Edit: This colour list is quite old, and some normal DS's do turn purple when doing this test. These also need the Passkey2 to work.

well, if it's a DS Lite and you have no DS games you shouldn't get a Passkey 1 or 2 (both require a DS game to work)

What you should get is a M3 and a Passcard.

The passcard does the same thing s a passkey, but is the same size as a DS game, and does not need a DS game to work.
