Will I have worse luck with getting a good DVD if I choose to burn directly with no HD saving in Nero Vision (v3)? Also, when I choose High Quality, Progressive, and 2PassVBR, I get a notification telling me it will not all fit onto a 4.7GB DVD and asks if it should compress things to make them fit. So should I tell it to keep the big high quality file, burn to the hard drive, and THEN later let Nero Burning Rom compress it? With Nero Burning ROM, I choose Video DVD, right? And then it will automatically make it all fit for when I burn it? Some people have also said they prefer to use Nero Vision to encode AVIs as DVDs, but then use DVDShrink to burn/compress the files... Anyone have a preference? Thanks and sorry about having so many questions
Seems to me you are using the same software just in a different manner to get to the same place. Personally I always burn to HD first but this is just so I can check the result before I burn it to DVD-r. IMO there is no difference in burning directly to the disk. As for the compression I use Custom myself and choose my own bitrate depending on the size of my project. Just make sure to keep the size to around 4.2-3GB's. The notification and automatic compress option can be handy if your not bothered setting your own bitrate and want to be sure you end up with the correct size to fit on a 4.7GB disk or indeed to get a ballpark bitrate figure that you can then adjust up or down. Personally I do not see the purpose of using shrink(its a precurser to Nero).
The way you want to do it is called Burning On The FLY and is not recommended, any mistakes and you've instantly produced a coaster. Most here will not recommend this practise but recommend ripping to HD first and then burning from HD. It takes a little longer but is the much safer way to go.
