Hi, my hdd messed up with error 16. I tried to hotswap but the pc never detected the xbox. Now i need to replace the hard drive. I have a Seagate 10 gig hdd. Ok, do I have to buy one the same as a seagate? or can it be another brand like Western Digital? as long as it's unlocked will another brand still work? Thanks.

You only need to post this once to one forum not multiple forums.

I am helping you in the Hardware Mods forum.

You can use any hd if it has the locking and unlocking capabilities. As far as hotswapping, try again because sometimes it does not always work the 1st 2nd 3rd or somethimes more, eventually you'll get it.

Hey knizzle, what about the eeprom? a friend told me that if i buy another hdd the xbox will still not work because i don't have the eeprom. He said that the motherboard and the hdd are unique. Is that true? will i have to buy a motherboard too?

Each xbox motherboard is 'married' to the hard drive at the factory so that hard drive will only work with the motherboard it came with. Unless you un lock the drive.

You should mod your system with a chip, get one from a friend if they have a solderless one and you can install a new drive without much problems.

Its going to be much more costly for you to go buy a new motherboard and a hard drive combo.. You potentially will need to get a new power supply to work with the new mobo, and new controller ports and all sorts of stuff. It will end up costing you more then a new xbox.

The quickest and cheapest way is to either borrow a mod from a friend or pickup a low costing solderless mod, install it to your system recover your hard drive or install, setup the dash and lock it.

Then if you dont have a use for the chip sell it to a friend or something.

    just my 2 cents anyways.
