i have 256 mb of ram on my computer and i am about to add another 512 on to it. I have a choice between 2 types that are the same price.

    512MB PC3200/2700/2100 DDR

    and

    512MB DDR SDRAM Desktop

whats the difference and which do i choose? also, when i install the ram, shold i place it the slot right under the 256 or do i replace the 256 and stick the 256 in another slot? thanks in advanced.

both are the same but 1st shows the different speeds it can run at. put new stick into empty slot as new stick will run at same speed as old stick.

my old stick is 256, my new stick will be 512. so if the new one will run the same speed as the old one, wont that slow down my computer?

say your 256meg is pc2100 but the new 512meg is pc3200, the new ram will run at the 2100 speed not 3200 as long as old memory is being used. probably won't notice a slow down as the extra 512meg will help programs load faster at startup.

Well 1 GB of PC2100 RAM will not be very fast either. I'd recommend you buy a 1 GB stick of PC3200 RAM because RAM doesn't cost much these days...you will also see a big improvement with the PC3200 over the PC2100.

if your motherboard is capable of running a pc3200 at it's speed & not slower.

Yeah lotus256...what motherboard do you have(manufacturer and model)

Then we will be able to recommend the best RAM for you

all memory that say DDR (not incl DDR2) is basically the same but they all run at different speeds.

    PC3200 DDR runs at 400MHz
    PC2700 DDR runs at 333MHz
    PC2100 DDR runs at 266MHz

All DDR memory has 184 pins wheras DDR2 has 240 Pins (this is why theyre not to be confused)

as for installing the ram it doesnt really matter which slot you put the new dimm into but its better to have both dimss at the same speed

    CPU-Z!

Your Compaq probably runs memory at 133MHz (266DDR) which is PC2100 speed. This provides a bandwidth of 2100MB/second, hence the name.
I would be surprised if it runs PC2700 or especially PC3200...
But PC3200 is what you buy, and it runs happily at the lower clock frequency.
You'll be fine with an old 256, but if you wanted best performance you would want 2 of the 512MB PC3200 (or 1 x 1GB, even better ;^)
The reason is, PC3200 will support much faster memory timings at PC2100 speed, than PC2100 will.
You could run the 512MB with very aggressive timings, but with 768MB it will support only the timings of the slowest chip - which is the old 256MB.
But most people don't care, they can't adjust timings and their BIOS is all automatic anyway... and 768 is much better than 256MB, you'll like it :^)
So grab cheap generic PC3200, it shouldn't matter about which slot, and enjoy.
    Regards

will it work faster if i take out the 256 and put in the 512 since the 256 is slowing it down? and yes it does run at 133MHz.

    PC2100 runs 133MHz (266DDR)
But it's just silly to special-order it when PC3200 is in stock...
