Differnce between dvd-r and dvd+r?

    I am wondering what is the difference between dvd+r and dvd-r discs? Is it important that DVD-players support both formats or is one enough? I´ve seen that many Philips DVD-players only support the dvd+r(w)format. Does anyone know how that comes?
