    wuts the difference between DVD-R AND DVD+R AND DVD-ROM

    my dvd burner is a galaxy metal gear box (external burner) and it can burn dvd+_rw dvd-rom cd-rw and cd-rom.. my brother bought dvd+r disks.. using nero i can burn dvds but using other programs to convert avi to dvd wont work.. it keeps on saying "please insert blank disc" do you guys think its the type of disk i have?

    -r has a universal id on the inner hub that says its a dvd. +r doesnt have this so u can set it yourself thus the term dvdrom. u can booktype with nero and other apps to set this. nero vision express and nve4 should convert divx(avi) to dvd(mpeg2)and burn in dvd rom on ur +r media.

    Your discs could be the problem. I don't recommend TDK. Are they +r or -r? Use this free utility http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and tell us the manufacturer of the discs.

    TDK= NOT Good. Firmware is you burner's "Operating System" Do you have DVD Decrypter? If you do, open it,click tools, then click drive, then "check for firmware" It will tell you what firmware you have. If you have Nero, open Nero start Smart and click "Get System Info" Under drive, it will tell you what firmware you have. That is important, so your burner can be compatible with your media.

    Cmc magnetics is one of the worst disc manufactures there is. TDK dvd+r's are known for being made by cmc mag and is why I don't recommend them. I recommend verbatim, taiyo yuden, or sony.

    @spicyazn
    Are you using your burner to do movies? There is no reason to buy +RW, which is more expensive. Just DVD+R or DVD-R, depending on what you player likes, Buy discs from Verbatim or from Sony or Maxell Made in Japan. If you buy on-line, you can also get Tayio Yuden.
    Is this the burner that you bought?

    So, you want to burn a movie, watch it and then erase it?
    Probably is easier to just rent the thing, but if that is your plan, go with RW.

    Whatever you decide, +/-, buy the brands suggested above. Don't buy another CMC Mag(TDK in your case)
