I am new to this forum & also not sure if this is the appropriate placement of this query but unsure of where else to turn. I have been using computers for several years but am not computer 'techy' at all. My main use is for genealogy (WordPerfect, a genealogy program, digital & scanned photos & items etc.) & my husband's is AutoCad. We have Windows XP home version. I had been using a previous version of Nero (possibly 4 - came with our computer in 2003). Had some problems with our computer & ended up having it almost completely rebuilt (except for the hard drive). Previously to this I had copied any files I was able to onto a disk using my usual (& only known way) method. This was mostly 'My Documents" files. The 'new' computer now includes a 'new' version 7 of Nero. I began the process of adding emails, favourites then went to copy "My Documents" from my disk - it showed I had NOTHING! My 1st. thought was that I had not copied it correctly & that I must not have checked it in my haste or??? Highly upset I carried on. In the meantime I had now added a few things to "My Documents" on the new computer. Later I went back into my disk to again check to see if maybe I was not seeing something properly. At this time there were a few more items on my disk BUT they were the new ones now on my computer which I had not chosen to copy to disk - at least not to my knowledge. Now I am wondering - is it in any way possible for the computer to automatically write to this disk & replace whatever was there with whatever is on my computer in the same location. I do not use re-writeable disks. I know this is lengthy & sounds bizarre but I am really concerned about putting any further of my previous disks into the computer & having them all messed up (I have done about 5 already trying to find older info. etc.) We now have a CD/DVD burner & had only a CD burner before. Can anyone tell me if this is me or our computer keeping in mind that I am not very computer techy when it comes to locating or changing any computer stuff. Thanks for any help.

    Hi Eniale
I had a hard time following all that you were saying...and that might be because it is late and I am tired. And I could also say something about your writing style! ;) .... not to say my English is any better...

Anyway... please take a moment to answer these questions:

1-Do you still have the original files on your old computer?
2-When you say you saved your files on a disk, are you talking about a CD-R?
3- When you copy your files the usual way, what way is that? Drag and Drop in Windows Explorer(the window that opens when you click on "My Computer")? Copy and Paste in Explorer? Do you burn your files onto a CD using Nero Express? Please be specific of the method you have used.
4-Next to the clock on the bottom right of your screen, you will see a bunch of icons. You may have to click the "<" to see all of them. I want you to put your cursor on each one and tell me if you see one that says "InCD".

Intuition says that you may have accidently burned those new files onto the same CD instead of your "My Documents" folder on your new computer. If that is the case, a new session is created on the CD showing the new files, but that makes the old session not visible to Windows anymore. (That is a limitation of Windows, not the computer). So the old files are there but hidden "behind" the current session. If this is the case, you will need a utility like ISObuster to see the first session again. (The free version won't recover UDF files so I don't know if that will be a problem for you.)
Get ISObuster here : Click Here

How to use it? Well, I leave that to another time or another person....

    Hope that works for you!

    Peace!

    Hi Fabribek;

I apologize for my poorly constructed query. I really didn't know where to start as it all sounded so strange to me. I appreciate you taking the time to help sort it out for me.

    1. No, I don't still have the original files on our 'old computer'. Our 'ex-computer' would be a closer description as almost every component was replaced except for the hard drive I am told. At that time I thought I had any important files saved & was not concerned.

    2. My files were 'saved' on a Verbatim disk (1x - 52x) but not sure what speed they were burned to - though all along I usually used a slow speed.

    3. My copying the 'usual way' was by using Nero & dragging & dropping files from my computer to the new CD (using 2 windows) but not using Windows Explorer.

    4. None of my icons say "InCD" incl. the hidden ones.

If I did accidentally burn the new blank 'My Documents' onto my CD (I almost always use a 'multi session) - are you saying it would have 2 "My Documents" folders with the older one hidden?

Sorry for the confusion, I hope I have written more clearly this time with your guidance. Thank you very much.

    Hi again

So if you do use Nero in multi-session, if you did write on to the same disk again, unknowingly or not, then yes... Windows will only see the latest session and not the ones before. From my understanding of things and from reading in other forums, this is a limitation of Windows and not of the hardware.

So to see the previous sessions, you will need a tool like ISObuster which will allow you too see ALL the sessions on this disk. You will have to go download it, then install the program, then start it up, install your CD and then PRAY real hard that it is there. :)

    ----------

Also, you mention that the old computer has been rebuilt except for the hard drive. If this is the case and it has NOT been erased or re-formatted, then your old files will still be there on that hard drive.

Also, for future reference, there is an option in Nero to verify after burning. This way you would know on the spot if the CD you just burned has errors or not. It saves a lot of headaches in the future, especially in the old days when some disks were of questionable quality.

    Hope that helps!
    Peace

    as Fabribek says

in multisession its like a cd-rw disc, can keep adding, but if the same file name used it will get over written to latest entry.

there could be a setting in nero to WARN if over writing and may be turned off?

    Thank you Fabribek & Dawn Addict;

I do not have my old files BUT I think I have figured out some of my problems. I kept thinking & re-examining as you came up with possible answers. We have 2 Window accounts & I did my last copy from my husband's copying his files etc.(which are all fine), then decided to add my own documents from the same location, since there was space left etc. I realize now, that I had only copied the 'shortcut' to my own documents. When looking at the CD I had thought those files were on the CD when I really was looking on the hard drive (with the current only files) by clicking on the copied shortcut. On the new computer it came up a couple of times saying files were waiting to be copied (which I didn't choose) but this had also led me to believe something else was happening. This is all DUMB but since you had gone to so much trouble to help me, I just wanted to send a true apology to you.

I will also check to see if I can find out if the hard drive was erased or re-formatted & that is likely my last hope. I am also going to keep the info on ISObuster on file for it sounds like a good program to have. I will use some older 'backup' copies & get on with life. I really did learn something from all of this & appreciate very much at having some place to turn to with such expert help.

What are your views on doing a real 'backup' from a 'real' program. Is that useful or would it just confuse a non 'tech' person such as myself. Ordinarily I have copied files fine but just chose to do my most important & final one not so fine unfortunately.

    Again thank you.

    Your welcome Eniale
And... we all make mistakes! I can tell you some stories!
Mistakes are a wonderful incentive to make us learn and pay more attention!
You are quite capable of doing back-ups, give yourself credit! You just need someone to give you the procedure and help set you up and then you follow it.

Nero has BackIt Up as on e of it's tools! I am sorry but you will have to ask someone else to help you with backing-up because I don't use that program.

One thing to consider is to use Windows's "Files and Settings Wizard"
(Start - Accessories - System Tools) to back-up your configurations so that if you did have to start fresh, you won't have to rebuild all your settings. And if you use Firefox there are utilities for that too (FEBE and MozBackup). ....Or as Rotary mentioned, plunk down $$ for an external hard drive and back up that way.

    Good Luck!
    Peace to All!
