I have a movie that I did with Divx pro 5.1 and it has freezing problems. I have divx antifreeze installed and set for divx movies but it still freezes. During playback the audio will become unsynced after the freezes. I did this movie the same way as I did other movies and they did not have this problem. I've also done this movie twice and both times it has freeze problems.

If I install direct show filters, ffdshow, things like that it seems to help a lot but doesn't completely fix the problem. It also creates other problems. When I use virtualdub to load a divx file I get an error saying that it cannont find the appropriate decompressor and then I have to reinstall divx, which stop ffdshow from working right and the major freezes start up again.

If I uninstall divx I can still view the movies without it. Is that right for it to do that? How do they play without divx installed? Is it ffdshow that allows that?

Here's a little more info. I did the video at 576x432 resolution. I'm trying to keep it big so there isn't much resizing when I enlarge it to full screen, to keep high quality in the picture. It's a standard 4:3 aspect ratio. Could this just be to big for the picture? Should I go smaller? 512x384? Or something else even smaller?

I've done 16:9 movies at 576x240 or sizes similar and they have no problems like this. Due to there being less piture in the height I assume?

    Thanks.

What sort of settings did you use before you encoded the movie?

FFDShow uses the libavcodec to decompress movie files. Not too sure what exactly goes on that allows the filter to do it.

Have you experienced this freezing problem before using this codec?

I used 576x432 resolution with about 1083 bitrate, it's an 81 minute movie and i'm aiming at 700mb cd, and mp3 audio at 96kb. I've used divx 5.1 to do other movies without these problems.

Did you download any codecs or codec packs before encoding the movie?

When you play the DVD on your computer, do you get this same freezing problem?

There is no problem with the dvd and the decrypted vobs also play fine. I re-encoded the file again at 512x384 and it seems to work fine now, I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but what I have seen seems to play good. I think the resolution was just too large and was causing problems.

I've tried the movie on several systems and it does it on all of them. One is a 500mhz and one is a 2.8ghz. It freeze on both of those.

Id expect a 500 Mhz system to have some trouble playing back a divx movie but the other one...Im not sure why after resizing to a lower resolution it would play well on your faster computer...unless you used other settings.
