I never used to have this problem with Windows XP Pro but now I'm using Windows XP Home which I bought and is fully up-to-date with auto-updates. If I view the contents of a folder which contains DivX files as thumbnails I get an alert: The instruction at "0x02d2321f" referenced memory at "0x0000000". The memory could not be "written". If I click OK Windows quits and restarts (without rebooting) and if I click CANCEL it locks up for about a minute then quits and restarts the same way. I've uninstalled DivX v6 and thumbnails are no problem although I only get the large default Windows Media Player icons. I tried installing DivX v5.05 and I get exactly the same thing. I tried registering on the forums on divx.com to post this but there is a problem with their registration process and won't let me join. I've got WMP v10 installed, PNY Verto GeForce 5700LE, AMD XP2100+ at 1.73GHz and 1GB DDR 266MHz RAM. Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
regsvr32.exe /u shmedia.dll No more buggy MS thumbnail shell extension. If it doesn't help then: regsvr32.exe shmedia.dll and things are back to normal.
