One fast method is to run VirtualDub then drag the file onto the VirtualDub window.
Click 'Video' 'Direct Stream Copy' then 'File' 'Save as AVI' - give the file a new name.
VirtualDub can often correct errors in files and make them acceptable.
Selecting 'Direct Stream Copy', ensures that no re-compression takes place.

K when i dragged in the working films i got:-

could'nt locate decrompressor for format 'DX50'
vitualdub requires a video for windows
(VFW) compatible codec to decompress video
DirectShow codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable.

For the ones that don't work i get:-
could'nt locate decrompressor for format 'XVID'
vitualdub requires a video for windows
(VFW) compatible codec to decompress video
DirectShow codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable.
