I have a Lyra RD2780, and while it is a bit difficult it was cheap. The player works great but you have to have video encoded correctly and I am not sure how to do this.

What is the best way to encode a DVD rip or other file to a DivX or XviD file that is 320 X 240, does NOT use B-Frames and uses 128k CBR MP3 audio? I believe this is called MPEG4 Simple Profile.

What container? Use AVISynth to resize, then just encode and make sure that you don't have ASP features enabled. For XviD you could select a Simple Profile, for DivX I guess you have the handheld profiles (also in XviD 1.1.x builds). The audio you can encode with say BeSweet. Muxing depends on the container.

An all in one type app like AutoGK should also be able to do the job.
