im on optus and have recently been switched over the the new optus direct service which promises speeds anywhere from 1.5mbps to 20mbps. the 302g is capable of up to 8mbps and the 502t is capable of 24. the only problem is when i have the 502t connected there are constant dropouts on the service. i have been forced to switch back to the old modem.
when i used the adsl2+ modem i got speeds up to 4.2mbps but now i only get 3mbps. i want to be able to use the 502T for better speed but i can't work out why it would drop out. i am using new filters and my line is fine. i have done an isolation test with the new modem, but still dropouts occur.
    help me please!

When you say dropouts, what do you mean exactly, the DSL signal going down? ADSL2 Modems are prone to crashes if too much data is forced through them, but it may simply be a case that your line isn't stable enough for the higher speed that the ADSL2 Modem is able to sync at.

by drop outs i mean the modem says disconnected under status and it will take about 30 seconds to re-establish a connection to the internet. i haven't been forcing a lot of data through it, it would just d/c at random times, didn't matter what i was doing. i am now back on the 302G and it is working fine, no dropouts. so i know now that it is definitely the 502T's fault. but i just don't understand why it would. my line is fine i am actually get about 3.2mbps which is 1mb slower than i was getting with the 502T. any suggestions?

Contact your ISP about it perhaps...

not an option. the 502T is a router and optus wants nothing to do with it as it is under their compatible modems but not their recommended ones. they provide no support for it.

Did you ask them for the correct settings to use? MTU, MRU etc?

ISPs may not offer support on a modem by modem basis but they should at least give you the settings required to set one up.

it might have something to do with the mtu and mru. just recently i had to change the mtu to enable login to msn messenger. it was 1500 but i changed it to 1400. im gonna have a fiddle around. i also want to disable the dhcp server on the modem as i already have a router that does the same thing. the 302G is good as it just does the PPPoE and give the ip straight to the router which assings each computer a lan IP. is there a way to change the 502T router do do the same without giving an ip to the other router and that router giving out more ips. because that is what is happening at the moment and i want it to act the same as the 302G.

1500 is the max as its what normal ethernet uses. Most ISPs use 1492 or 1490, AOL use as low as 1400.

IIRC, if the modulation's not right, you won't be able to connect at all.

i changed the mode from ADSL2+ (Multimode) to ADSL(multimode) i have a slight drop in speed from 4.2mbps to 3.9mbps and upload speed from 816kbps to about 768kbps but now the modem has stopped cutting out!

im happy to sacrofice a bit of speed for a constant connection.

Yeah your line might not be stable enough to support ADSL2.
