My friend is attempting to burn a few DVD's. The first time we tried, an error message popped up saying that the DMA is turned off. How do I turn that on? Second when weve ignored the error message and tried to add the file to the burn list, it shows another message saying thatthe software that used to decode the media is not on the computer. What kind of software do I need to decode and avi file so we can burn it to a DVD-R? BTW its and HP a1220n.
To turn on DMA do the folowing. Start/Contorl Panel/System/Hardware Tab/Click Device manager.... Now go down the list till you find your IDE controlers and click on it to branch out the contolers. Now go through and click on each IDE channel and click on the Advanced Tab. Make sure they are set to the highest DMA mode availble. If 1 is in PIO mode then that is the 1 that needs to be set into DMA mode. If you change it to DMA mode and goes back into PIO mode then right click and uninstall that IDE controler and restart your computer. Your computer then should set it in DMA mode. As to codecs for the AVI file your trying to play you need to make sure you have the codec that was used for that AVI file. Go to your CD.DVD drive in the device manager and try to uninstall the CD/DVD drive itself and then reboot. See if that helps.
Did you check your BIOS settings? Not just your regular drive listings which are all probably set to Auto, but look to see if your BIOS has an IDE, SATA, or RAID setup. You may need to specify a DMA mode. You also may need to go reinstall the drives like you did before.
