    I've been having problems with my NEC burner. Every time I burnt a DVD it would fail, but CDs were fine. Thinking this was a hardware thing, I bought a new DVD burner. I plugged it instead of the old burner, and now it constantly fails burning CDs and DVDs.

    I tried replacing the IDE connector (a different connector on the same cable) and Power cable from a different drive (DVD drive), but it didn't help either. I checked in windows to see if the DMA is on, and it is.

    Oh, I should probably also mention that a friend of mine renovated my computer a month ago - replacing the mother board, CPU and adding memory. Before he did that, the burner worked fine.

    What should I do?

    Here is the log from Nero:

    Latest firmware is 1.04 from here

    http://www.sonynec-optiarc.de/uploads/Zs/RQ/ZsRQw-Vxkf0pFDaRRHO14g/AD7170A_GN_104.ZIP

    These are not top quality media, try Verbatim or Sony

    You're cutting it a bit fine here

    This, by the way is a log from a failed CD burn, NOT a DVD...do you have a log from a failed DVD you can post.

    I noticed that your friend redid your computer, but did he reinstall winXP, or w/e os your using. Since he added cpu and mobo it isn't going to be the same specs as what windows had previously stored in a file in sys32. If it worked before, and it isn't working now could be 3 things windows doesn't recognize your setup and you should do a fresh install, or 2 some of your components aren't compatible, 3 the bios wasn't configured right. If he did a fresh install then compatibility could be the case, if your using new media that you haven't used before, that could be the case, make sure your using the correct media formats for the burners. It says here that DMA is not enabled or not being read

    17:48:46 #24 CDR -1502 File Writer.cpp, Line 303
    DMA-driver error, CRC error
    E: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A

    And a Cycle Redundancy Error!

    goto Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Admin. Tools > computer Management > > Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right click on the one that is connected to your stuff and make sure that DMA is enabled.

    Check that the IMAPI service is disabled: Run > type services.msc enter > right click IMAPI Properties, stop service and disable.

    You might have a corrupted aspi you can get it here:

    http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/scsi_soft/ASPI/ASPI-4.70/

    exact > install > aspichk > reboot.

    Post your sys specs it could be helpful since your computer has been redid.

    spreading the <3 to my peers!

    Gee, how smart are you...DMA IS ENABLED...computer scientist!!

    I notice you are only responding to threads that I have answered, trying to "show me up" shows that the "joint" you smoked has really addled what brain you have.

    You obviously know nothing about reading Nero history logs so dont make a bigger fool of yourself than you already have.

    OK Genius, explain what this actually is

    Oh and by the way

    This would show up in the log you genius

    Is this some kind of foreign language

    @glazberg

    Please disregard the rantings of this other poster, it is obvious he doesnt know what he's talking about

    Wow, was just trying to help. I had a corrupted aspi file and it didn't show up in the log. I'm sure every1 is grateful to have you around, and I picked the post at the top and responded to it. I posted that because it could be possible that DMA is an issue, so he should double check it.

    your funny and pathetic! I was only trying to help people , because I felt sorry for them for having to deal with noobs like you.

    Have fun buying loads of media, when it isn't the issue because this nub said so lol!

    Let me just clear one thing - my windows XP has been reinstalled (and then the trouble started). After that, I've reinstalled it once again, and the problem presists.

    I'll check out all of your suggestions later today and will add a log of a failed DVD burn.

    Thanks.

    @glazberg,

    just follow the suggestions I have made and see how it goes, as far as I know it's got nothing to do with your windows re install...hopefully the firmware update will fix it.

    I'd disable the IMAPI service if it's enabled, because it can cause problems with nero.

    http://club.cdfreaks.com/f48/imapi-cd_burning-com-xp-service-needed-nero-6-a-169190/

    You might have to update the firmware, but since you stated you bought a new drive, and it also didn't work, it's probably not the case.

    Have you been using the media for some time, or is it a new type of media; which could be the issue. You can check media compatibility on the optical drive manufacturers website in most cases.

    I would make sure the bios configurations are correct, and if that isn't the issue look up the compatibility of the motherboard and the optical drives it supports. These can be found on the motherboard manufactures website. You should post your system specs so people can see what you are running.

    OK, in this log I can see the following

    These are not good quality discs...their production is inconsistent and often fail, try Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan)

    Try burning at 4X

    Heres something on that error

    I don't belive it's because of the media. I have been using the same media for a long time. But even if it is part of the problem - it can't be all of it. The firmware update failed. I'm guessing it has something to do with the IDE cable.
    I don't know anything about IDE cables, so I can't tell you if it's a 40 pins or not, but I did replace the IDE connector from another DVD drive to the burner (same cable, different connector).

    I'll go and buy different media and try to burn it, though I doubt that that is the problem.

    Thanks

    What is the name of the media you are buying?

    @ glazberg

    Gewndolyn has already identified your media's manufacturer as CMC Magnetics. That's not very good media for many burners. I do think there may be other problems, however. Based on the error messages there seem to be persistent communication errors. Try replacing your IDE cable if you have a spare. Also be sure the cable is firmly seated into both the motherboard connector and the device connector. Also unplug from the IDE cable, the LG DVD-ROM for the time being. Are both drives correctly jumpered for master/slave or software selectable mode?

    Other conflicting drivers such as roxio, winamp, etc.. Check the nero website for additional info. A lot of people will point to media being the issue because thats all they know. :) cheers!

    Okay yumster69 this and you're other lovely post leaves little doubt what you are trying to do and who you are (+ I checked).

    Next time you sign up let's play nice and contribute something meaningful to the forum.

    @glazberg
    Just to add to laddyboy's post check your bios and make sure the drives are listed w/ DMA enabled (just in case). I'd also see if there are any updates for it.

    @yumster69
    If there were other drivers they would be listed under the Existing drivers section of the Nero log.
    The reason a lot of people point at media being an issue is the biggest problem.

    @glazberg
    The reason I ask the media you are buying is, if you are not buying branded media, you have know idea what you are getting.
    Memorex is an example. They buy Ritek,CMC, Verbatim etc then put thier name on the outside.

    Teac (both DVD and CD)

    How do I do that? I know how to check the bios when the cumputer starts up. What should I be looking for in there?

    Hmm.. good question. I assumed it was ok since Windows recognized the drives. Where can I find how the jumpers should be set up? also, if I have 2 DVDs must one of them be the slave? and the other the master?

    I tried unplugging the DVD drive and it still failed. As I mentioned before, I have used its connector in the IDE cable.

    Thanks for all your help
    Glazberg.

    Like laddyboy pointed out the error you get - DMA-driver error, CRC error is a communication error.
    Basically the data sent from the pc is verified with the drive to make sure it matches. In your case it doesn't - hence the error.
    So part of the transmission is amiss.

    Most drives come set to slave when you buy them. Your drive is set on the master connector so if you didn't switch the jumper to master this may just be your problem.
    The jumper pin setting should reflect which connector it's on - master to master etc.
    If the DVD-Rom used to be set on the master then the jumper on that drive will need to be switched to slave too.
    Here's a guide

    Another cause is the ide cable is bad or going bad - this could cause 'bad transmission' - so try another cable.

    Maybe a bad port on the motherboard - if you have a extra ide port try plugging the ide cable from the burner and dvd-rom into it.

    Try just having the burner connected as laddyboy suggested.

    To check in bios during boot hit F8. In the main scene arrow down to where you see the burner and dvd-rom listed - yours would be the secondary ide channel. Arrow to 1 drive and press enter - dma mode will be listed. Hit the esc key to then check the next one.

    For the bios update or check I would only do that if all else above failed - a mistake up there can really screw things up.
