Can the DMS4 play games from a USB hard drive hooked up via the USB port to a v15 PS2 Slimline?

Not directly no. But with USBA/E any chip can boot play back-ups from a USB HDD however only about 5% of all PS2 games are compatable with USBA/E which is a poor solution if you ask me.

    Have fun!

You're telling me modgod. I bought USB extreme first only to realize it was a total piece of crap and couldn't play most of my games. Do any of the mod chips have the ability to load from a USB drive?

If you mean can any chip directly boot back-ups from a USB HDD the answer is no. If you mean can you boot apps like ULE,HDL,SMS from a USB device ... yes any of the top 3 chips can do this. In fact ULE is the best as doing this and ULE can be booted in dev1/2 mode with the top 3 chips or with any chip ULE can be booted from a disc.

Don't mean to sound stupid, but I have absolutely no idea what this means. Can you explain it a little better for me?

    Thanks!

There are homebrew (not made by Sony) that can be booted from a USB device. The most common 3 apps are ULE which is a ELF launcher and file browser. ULE stands for unofficial LauchELF. An ELF just so you know is like a executable file for the PS2. HDL stands for HDLoader which is an app used to boot back-ups from an IDE HDD connected to your PS2. SMS (simple media system) is a type of media player for the PS2 that can play mp3's, avi's and soon mpeg's.

Thanks Modgod! I appreciate the explanation.

Here's my next question - how do I hook up a hard drive to my PS2?

Well you have a slim PSTwo, so unless you have a V12 or V13 you are out of luck. If you are fortunate enough to have a V12/13 then you can have HD-Connect/Combo installed which will allow you to use an IDE HDD in your slim PSTwo and then be able to use HDL to boot the back-ups you have installed to it.

If you have the older fat PS2 all you need is a Sony PS2 network adapter and then you can plug any IDE HDD into the NA to use with HDL. Just so you all know ... have you noticed that the PS2 NA's are not available from Sony and many retail stores are out of stock? This is also because of HDL. You best bet to find them these days is on eBay.

    Have fun!

they are discontinued because they made the slims with the network port built in and with the release of the PS3, the fat consoles are outdated and therefore they dropped production of the NA as 'obsolete' like the PSX :)

Correct and the slim was in response to HDL. At this point in time Sony stopped releasing NA's as well as lasers for the fat PS2's. In fact there is no such thing as a "new" KHS-400C, KHS-400B, HD7, or KHS-400R. This believe it or not had everything to do with HDL.

Crazy that that one little program had such an impact on Sony.

So am I out of luck for using a hard drive with my ps2? I have a v15 and don't care for USB Extreme. Any other option?

Often times you can find refurbished fat PS2's at gamestop for around $100. They might even have one with an NA. Or there is always eBay. Look for a V5-V10 if you can.

I thought that's what you would say. I have a friend with a fat PS2. I'll see if he wants to trade me for my slim. That would also alleviate the problem of trying to find a diagram for my v15.

Thanks again guys. I like it so much better when you two aren't fighting!:)

the only place you can buy a functioning console (both XBOX & PS2) cheaper then a 'broken' one. i guess people have a fixation with 'I'm gonna fix this thing and sell it' and will pay more for the broken consoles........never ceases to amaze me.

Good news. I traded my slim for a fat v5/6 with a network adapter. It's everything I ever wanted. Now I can get my chip in and play from the hard drive.

DMS4 Pro SE has the ability to play games from the hard drive...right????

AWESOME! You are a true Champion KC. I appreciate your helpfulness and quick replies.

Does the program copy games to the hard drive using the playstation - or do I hook the hard drive up to my computer to copy the game?

    Thanks again,

    Matt

P.S. Does anybody answer posts around this place besides you and PS2ModGod?
