Greetings everyone I have windows vista x64 home edition running on my tablet. I access the internet via wifi in my laptop by connecting to the wireless network that ive made recently i hooked up another computer that didnt have wifi to the net by just connecting an extra pair of ethernet cable to the extra port in my router and then another end of the cable to the ethernet port on the laptop then a day or two later either because of a file i downloaded on my laptop (which has the wifi) or because of some files that i transferred from a cd the internet on my laptop with the wifi doesnt work; it shows that there is a network present and that an internet connection is established however when i open a browser (opera, firefox, etc) the connection disappears Upon hitting 'diagnose and repair' im confronted by 'could not connect to www.microsoft.com" and it gives me an iP address I looked up the IP address and checked out other forums to see what the issue is and discovered its some sort of DNS virus I called the Internet technicians and they suggested reboot the harddrive however that isnt an option in my case not unless i have no other options left Prior to encountering this problem i had bitdefender internet security 2010 running; after i had this problem i tried a few things: - i tried uninstalling and reinstalling my wifi driver but the issue persisted - i gave a full system scan using bitdefender as well as AVG free version 8.5 but nothing out of the ordinary was found (no infections etc) - I tried system restore to an earlier date (a looong time before i even had this issue) and it still didnt solve anything I can confirm that there is no mechanical fault with my laptops wifi card because i cant connect to the net even with devices that havent been hooked up to this computer (my mobile phone) that has wifi Im pretty sure its a DNS issue; be it a DNS virus or whatever its called i just dont know how i can confirm that and more importantly treat it I also ran some ping diagnostic tests via command prompt but to no avail
I would run a scan with malwarebytes, followed by the free version of Eset...if you have been trusting AVG and bitdefender, you might have a lot of viruses and spyware. If it passes, then login to your router and set the DNS servers to 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 . Then open your wifi adapter's network settings and set the first DNS to your router's IP address (usualy 192.168.1.1), and set the second to 4.2.2.2
I tried running malware bytes it did pick up a few infected files and removed them but im not sure how would i login to my router?
ok.. little dos needed to find out your routers ip command prompt.. ipconfig read the ip assigned to your network connection probably guess 192.168.0.xxx router usually in that case 192.168.0.1 with login admin and password 1234 .. or google it's default settings by make and model. no idea where kb gets those dns numbers from.. I use an external dns service.. not one from my spying isp. OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220
i typed 'ipconfig' as per your instructions and my Ipv4 address is 192.168.2.2 ; i managed to log into my router settings with the computer that does have internet running via a lan cable; im a little confused here since this is all new to me; am i meant to log into the router settings from the computer im trying to fix or the one thats already working? regardless of what; after i signed in via the laptop that has the internet i changed the dns settings as per instructed but that ended up in me losing access to all webpages; so luckily i managed to revert back to previous settings and so this laptop still has internet; but im back to square one again sorry to be so demanding but perhaps if you could tell me specifically what information is needed i can do my best to provide that and maybe then work our way out this one, thanks for all the help so far though, i really appreciate it.
just additional information that might be of help to anyone trying to help; upon hitting the 'diagnose and repair' option im confronted by this at the end of the process: "Cannot communicate with www.microsoft.com(207.46.19.254)" Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response Just to reassure everyone here; theres nothing wrong with my router
your router works.. excellent.. that's what i was trying to find out.. now what is the ip details for the one that is working? make the one that isn't the same.. after disconnecting the one that is.. and see if it works then.. that tests the network hardware at pc end. some checks.. your router is assigning ip's in the range 192.168.2.xxx .. so check what the non working one is getting.. in network connections check that "get ip automatically" is checked.. then back to the dos.. ping the router ping 192.168.2.whatever the router ip is and check the response then try ping www.google.com .. and see what happens. my dns settings are controlled from my router.. are yours? .. if they are then your dns numbers at the pc should be the same as the router ip.
the ip on the computer that cant connect to net is 192.168.2.2, the 1 that can is 192.168.2.4 my dns is set by my router , i tried pinging but to no avail i didnt quite understand you when u said: if you could please be so kind and clarify, it would be highly appreciated; as it is im honestly so grateful to you for trying to help me so far; thank you heaps!
pull the plug on the pc that connects.. then set the ip and gateway on the one that doesn't connect to those settings.. check that the network is enabled also.. it's somewhere or other.. control panel>network connections>enable what happens if you ping 127.0.0.1 ? That link teaches to make wireless networks on windows xp, i have windows vista...so im sort of confused about that. I tried to take out the lan cable from the computer that works and swapping the details like you said but that didnt work either I dont know if this will help in anyway but i cannot connect to the internet from this wireless network by wifi at all even using other devices like i tried my iPhone a friend tried his psp and we managed to connect to the network but internet wasnt working and the ip settings were different from the one on the working computer; i tried swapping the details with these devices too and pulling out the lan cable to that computer but still nothings resolved this is one sticky problem; i hate it argh thanks for helping so far though
