Do I "have" to select region code for player?

Hi there! I just received and installed my new Plextor PX-740A. Currently, the DVD region shows as Current Region not selected. Do I have to set it to a region?

I was kind of under the impression that it might be more beneficial to leave it, but then again, AnyDVD does act as a means to region-freeness...

I also read that using hardware as a fix instead of software is preferred.

I'm just trying to figure out if my current backup problem is media-related, or region-related. As of late, AnyDVD keeps giving me the message that it doesn't know if it can crack the code as my region isn't set, but it will just guess when it doesn't know.

I've been trying to backup backups that I burned on crummy disks (I didn't know any better) and I'm also getting a lot of CRC errors. I am finding that I can usually still copy using my LiteOn burner (which is set to our area).

I apologize for this being a little all over the place - it's late after a Looonnnnnggggg, fun weekend, and I'm kinda tired. But I have to do this now, because I can't concentrate on this too much when the kiddies are running underfoot!

Any thoughts, anyone? I'd appreciate your input.

Set the region, what's the big deal? With AnyDVD you'll be able to play any region anyway.

Your Plextor is actually a Benq1640 (a very good drive), or should I say a Plextor firmware crippled Benq. You might consider cross flashing it to Benq as it will open up all the testing functions that Benq offers (that the Plex firmware supresses). Benq also has updated the 1640 firmware many times.

A place to start if interested:

For copying discs try using DVDDecrypter. ISO Read, ISO Write. If it hits a rough spot it will keep trying to get a good read. You can set the number of retries.
