Do I have to update to play Punchout

I have an original wii with an original wiikey, I have not touched it nor have I been on this forum in a year and now I want to play punchout. After backing up, I put it in and the disc channel has a "wii system update logo" instead of the punchout logo. I have never seen this before, should I update?, if so by the disc or through the system via internet?. Also, I do not use the system other than playing backups, no homebrew, Thanks in advance!

As long as you've installed all the recently recommended wads and so forth, you should be completely fine to play Punch out on v3.2u

I was on v3.2j up until yesterday, but I completely altered my wii, and now it's at v3.2u and everything works perfectly!

I HAVE ORIGONAL WIIKEY FITTED TOOK A CHANCE AS WANTED TO PLAY PUNCHOUT AND SPORTS ACTIVE UPDATED TO 4.0 WORKS A TREAT.
I UPDATED WIIKEY TO LATEST FIRMWARE FIRST 1.9S I THINK IT IS DONT KNOW IF THIS WAS NEEDED,ALSO HOMEBREW CHANNEL AND INSTALLED GAMES STILL THERE DONT KNOW IF THEY WORK HAVENT TRIED THEM.

Guys, I'll confirm 4.0 wont hurt your system. It's required to play Punch Out BUt you can install the correct IOS's to get it to work. I had HB previously installed, updated like normal and updated to IOS v9 and it plays like a champ. Again 4.0 wont effect you unless you don't have HB installed and you try to go back to install it. Theres a few how-to guides that'll explain what files to upload before updating the firmware.

 

4.0 is not required to play punch out...just install preloader and the wii will never ask you for an update every again http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Preloader....the only problem you might run into is you might need to install the ios for certain games but you will know right away if that is the case because the game will just go black instead of working(another issue though)
