I am looking for a hard drive to play backups of my games. I currently have a V7 PS2 and Swap Magic 3.6 Discs. Do I need a modchip to install a hard drive?

If I don't what do you suggest?

    Network Adapter
    Internal HDD
    Software

    or

    Extenal Hard Drive
    USB Extreme
    Software

One Last Question: What software would I need for both? THANK YOU!!

No you do not need a modchip to play games from the hdd.

Without a doubt you should get the internal hdd as usb's tend to be slower. With you having swap magic you do not need to buy any software just the hdd & network adapter, you can install a exploit with the hdd loader onto your memory card (exploit) and use a Ps1 disk to trigger it.

How to make a exploit: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/186236

caewrzlra, since u use swap magic.. can u tell if it works just as good as the internally soldered modchips

Thanks for replying real quick. I have plenty of PS1 discs, but how to I "install an exploit with the hdd loader onto your memory card?"

Nevermind you already got a thread for it.

talha_446, I don't have any experience with mod chips. Swap Magic is great, I just don't like messing with the inside of my ps2 so much.

So pretty much all I do is install the exploit to my memory card using Swap Magic, then connect the Hard Drive to the Network adapter, and then boot the HDD on the PS2?

    Yep,

Step 1 install hdd & network adaptor
Step 2 Create a exploit on the PC & burn to a normal CD
Step 3 Install exploit to memory card using Cd version of Swap Magic
Step 4 Stick the Ps1 game in the Ps2 and power on and let it trigger the exploit that will load up a program which then will allow you to run a FREE hdl (hard drive loader)
Step 5 All goes well ya'll b4e playing your games fine and dandy.

I don't think that can be done.
