Do v12 PSTwo's require the laser fix if Swap Magic is used (and not a hard-wired modchip)?

It's my understanding that the modchips can cause an overflow of the laser on a V12 pstwo. If I am to use Swap magic and a Magic Switch, do I have anything to worry about when reading DVD-R's in a v12 PSTwo?

I ask because I have the option of buying a pre-owned (and probably v12) PSTwo for $89, or a brand new one for $129 (which would likely by a v13). If I'm using swap magic to boot backups, is it advisable for me to spend the extra $40 on a brand new v13?

With a V12 i would get one if you plan on playing back ups with any method. In fact i would get one even if i wasn't just to be safe as they are only about $10, plus an install of course.
