I just got a phone call from a guy who's 360 I flashed (iX1.6) about 3 months ago. He say's his box was banned today. (He wasn't calling to complain, he wanted to know when I could flash another one for him). He says that he never got a chance to play any burned discs on it, only his original GTA IV, Soulcalibur, Gears 2. This means that the only burned disc it's ever loaded was the copy of Halo 3 that I test every 360 I flash with. By it being that one-time DVD+R DL load, do you guys think that the FW is what was detected by Microsoft?

I read some speculation that the new thing causing firmware to be detected is the way it responds to not backups, but originals.

This would lend credence to that idea.

However, there are also the possibilities of him lying or MS actually being able to read firmware. If MS could read the firmware itself, everyone would be banned. Seeing as how there are still folks who aren't banned, I don't think MS can directly read firmware... only make educated guesses about it based on abnormal responses.

certainly, MS is def. detecting modded firmware. It has nothing to do with which disc you played. I played CODMW2 all day yesterday on live (retail version) Today while i was playing, almost towards the end of it, I got disconnected in the middle and was banned. So they are definitely detecting the firmware.

They are possibly sending some packets while one is online and having your system respond with the firmware info. So no matter what you do, you will get banned eventually. A new firmware will have to be really smart to avoid this in the future.

that story is not logical ... if he never played backup games on it why would he want you to flash another one ?? doesnt make sense so i dont believe it

That doesn't mean they detected your FW while playing Modern Warfare 2. You could've been flagged a while back and they just now got around to hitting you.

My thoughts also. M$ can only guess if the firmware is modded based on responses by other components.

M$ IS DEF. 100% DETECTING FIRMWARE,CRAZIPAKI SAID IT HERE FIRST!!!
Dude come on use some logic, you have to get banned sometime and if you have looked at more than 2 threads you would know they save data and ban people in huge waves at a time regardless of what you are playing at that moment lol

    Here's a noob's question for you all:

Once MS gains access to a console, what's preventing it from reading the drive's firmware?

How about we all just sit back, relax, and wait for an answer from the man himself, C4EVA.

come on, do you noobs do any research at all before you post just dumb things which you obviously have no understanding about? Firmware cannot be natively detected. They can't "connect" to your box and query it for the drives fw. They CAN issue challenges and wait on responses. They cannot see the fw you have. If it was possible (which in no way it is) 100% of us would be banned, end of story.

You need to learn to think logically.

Geez... not another one of you. Read above post.

Then bang your head on the wall.

What do you mean access? You know they don't get control of your box right?

    (shaking my head....)

any flavor of WMI running on xbox will let them query the firmware..or information regarding any component. I think what matters is what causes for that query to take place...that is the question!

they are definately not detecting the firmware. I have a friend who hadn't played his xbox since a few months back when it got the rrod. Tonight i was getting it ready to be sent in by putting the xclamps back in so microsoft couldn't look at the inside and know the warranty sticker i had safely removed was bullshit since I had to have opened it up to put the fix in the first place. After I did all this for some reason the box started working again so I decided to put original firmware back into the drive because i thought that would prevent his xbox from getting banned. As soon as I tried to log into live i was banned. Even though the firmware was supposedly "original" the xbox was still banned.

ok so im not sure if this is gonna be of any use to anybody but as far as i can tell its almost definitly firmware i got my 360 flashed about a year ago and was all excited about it but only managed to get ahold of l4d and halo wars which are low key games and i got banned playing a marketplace game online so im pretty sure the only thing the could have found for me to get banned off of was my firmware

and regarding the query about a month ago microsoft sent out a small dashboard update that nobody seems to remember and nobody could seem to find im betting the sent EVERYONE a small packet that detects what firmware u have through whatever type of way they thought was foolproof and now they sent out the wave to everyone to get the ban just what i think at least

are you that naive? you dont think MS has been gathering info on people for months? just because you put stock FW back on a drive doesnt mean it hasnt been flagged for months. come on man

    Dont you think that if it was that simple to access the firmware on the DVD drive, that we would all be flashing our consoles remotely through the ethernet connection? Whereas we're not... we have to hard wire the drive to our Sata, and then unlock, put into vendor mode etc etc;

If they are able to detect the firmware whilst your drive is still active (i.e. sending a 'vendor mode' request) it would interrupt your gameplay as the 360 would temporarily lose control of the drive?!

    just a thought!

word... I had my box done about a year ago now. I have almost never used my originals and had ie1.6 on my sammy that was spoofed as a lite-on. I updated to ie1.61 and played MW2 for a day. Next day i was burnt. I checked the game through abgx, not sure if there is an issue there, and it was repaired. I am not sure but all i know is that i didnt play games early, cant vouch that all games were stealth, and i got banned when i updated to 1.6.

Also My friend has had his since launch and was modded. He got hit after i put 1.51 on his drive within a few days. I wish we could get a leak on the info... If the game gets leaked early how come we dont know more about ban waves... and last but not least i hope this is a wave and not a new constant check.

If i get a new system do you think microsoft has me flagged already? I dont wanna get hit right after i do a box and then realize they have flagged my account.

Think about how we use JF. We need to put the drive into Vendor mode/Mode B to read the firmware. So therefore Microsoft (if this was possible) would have to put the drive into Vendor mode before reading the firmware, this can't be done while the drive is in use.

I'll say it again, after saying it countless times on #fw, the firmware itself is not detectable, only challenges/responses from MS to the drive.

Edit: This response was to the stubborn members who still contest that the firmware is detectable and failt to listen to logic. Not to you eebeejay.
