I am trying to download some old VHS onto my pc but cannot get as far as even connecting it properly.I tried with pinnacle studio 8 (which works with my camcorder) attaching its yellow firewire, to no avail. Might I not be getting any response due the capture device, i.e a firewire? The program only displays a camcorder option, although it claims to support analog video VCR too. What options are open to me. Can anyone help. Thanks

You can not usually Hook a VCR directly up to a Firewire Card to capture VHS tapes because generally a VCR does not have a Firewire Output ,But if your Camcorder has an Analogue Input then you should be able to hook your VCR up to your Camcorder and then go from your Camcorder into your PC Via Firewire, This way your Camera Compresses the Analogue Video Data to Digital DV format and losslessly transfers the data to your Hard drive...Captureing Analoge Video useing an Analogue Capture Card is totally different that Useing a DV Firewire Card to Transfer the Video from your Camcorder to your PC..With your Camcorder the Data on your DV Tape is exactly the same Data that you are Transfering to your Hard drive But with Analoge Capture your Capture Software makes a sort of Digital copy of the analoge signal and a lot of the Video information gets Lost so there is allways some loss in Quality .....
So if your Camcorder has analogue Inputs then you can hook the VCR up to your Camcorder and then to your PC but if it doesn"t then you will need a Analoge Capture device...You should also know that you will in most cases not be able to record Retail VHS tapes because they are Copy protected......Cheers
