Hi all This might be a stupid question, but will a higher quality source e.g. blu-ray or HDTV provide a better quality xvid (or for that matter h264) encode than a DVD source if the final bitrate or filesize is the same. Really im wondering if the better source (presumably with less noise etc ?) might allow the encoder to make better decisions and thus give a higher quality result. I'd appreciate any thoughts, cheers
Well it's not a stupid question, but one of the variables (which you didn't mention) that will make a difference is the target resolution of the avi. If the res of the avi is quite small, I doubt whether you'll see much difference - if it's the same or very close to Std. DVD, the hi-res source may give a better result. All in all, your mileage will vary. Another variable is the quality/mastering (detail) of the blu-ray. Does it really have more detail or is it just bigger? Why don't you try it and let us know?
