I was using Shrink and have resently been using Recode. When using Shrink I would output the files as an image file (.ISO) for burning. Using Recode I have selected the Image Recorder as the output (as I would have in Shrink) and have yet to get an image file that will produce a playable DVD movie backup. After some reading I have found that most help/instructions on backing up DVDs tell you to store to the HDD and then burn those files. I have been using the HDD output method and find it works perfect every time. Problem solved. The questions I have are: Is there a problem on my end or does Nero have a problem with image part of Recode? Has anyone else had the same problem with the image files Recode creates? Is anyone using the Image Recorder successfully for DVD movie backups? (Try it ... see if it works.) Or is everyone else storing the output to the HDD or burning directly from Recode? Just curious .... I figured I payed for the software, it should work. Been emailing Nero tech support for almost 2 months now (7 to 10 days between responses)... no solution from them so far. Versions: Nero Reloaded - 6.6.1.4 Nero Vision Express - 3.1.0.25 Recode - 2.2.6.17b
I use Nero Recode all the time. I find it's faster than DVD Shrink. I use the Image Recorder, then burn the ISO. When you are prompted to save your image, make sure instead of using the Nero default (.nrg), select "all files", type in the name of your image with .iso at the end. I find that if I select .NRG, sometimes the disc won't play, but have never had any problems using the .ISO extension. I also always save an image, then burn either using IMGBURN, or DVD Decrypter, as burning while the file is encoding has never produced a usable disc for me. Hope this helps.
I burn with Recode and have never encountered a problem. Well, I could not load Recode in previous versions, but that's another story. I make sure to set it to burn to hard drive first, booktype DVD-ROM, then burn at half the discs rated speed (except TY's I burn full speed). It works like a charm each and every time.
@6Ripper9 Haven't tried namimg the file with an .iso extention. Didn't figure that would make a difference. But I will try it and let you know how it goes. @dvdnoobie The HDD method always works for me also. Lately been using 16x Verbatims. I burn them at 12x, haven't had a bad burn yet. As a rule I'll usually burn one step back off of max. Thanks for the replies
I always save the files in a folder onto HDD and then burn with Nero Burning Rom. If the copy doesn't play well, I can watch the saved files and see if the problem was during re-encoding, or burning. If you want to make another copy, you have the files ready to burn. Never bothered to save as an ISO, always the Video_Ts folder. Why do you want to save as an ISO? Or you were just experimenting?:~)
@cyprusrom When I started out backing up my DVDs I read the tutorials on Shrink and noticed the iso option and I tried it. As a newbie it was easy, no need to understand the audio_ts & video_ts folders, or what all those files were, and where they should go. Open Nero to backup iso file, click the file and burn ... extra copies were just as easy. With the new wave of encryption in the last 6 months and the need for additional programs to get the job done, I also have gone for the HDD method. As you said, it is much easier to play your files, before or after, and see if there are any errors or problems before wasting a disc. Once you understand it, burning the saved files from the HDD is as easy as an image. By reading the forum I have also discovered that you can extract the files from your iso image, nrg in Nero, with WinRar to play and check a problem. Although more difficult and time consuming then just burning to the HDD in the first place. To answer your last question: "Or you were just experimenting?:~)" Yes I have been experimenting ( Now that I have found a better work around)... It's broken and I need to know why and how to fix it. It most be part of the computer thing ... you either like tinkering with them or you hate them.
I will try to make an ISO with Nero just out of curiosity:~) I don't know about nero 6, but with nero 7 you can create virtual drive. You can then mount the ISO onto the drive and access it as if it were a disc or HDD folder, this way no need to use Winrar or other ISO unpacking tools.
Nero6 has Nero Image Drive ... never used it. Sort of looked at it like InCD ... didn't need it and the less running the better. Have you used it? It probably would be useful.
I used it just to see how it works, after I ripped a movie with DVD Decrypter in ISO Mode. InCD can be a pain in the a$$, I didn't hear anyone having problems because of virtual drives yet. I am still trying to figure out how to use it and play my PC game without having to have the CD in the drive--maybe I'll visit the proper forum and ask some help. But I agree, the less junk you have , less chances of software interferences and clashes. Some people have it all, Nero, InCD, Roxio, Prassi-Veritas...and nothing works. I think if you have a good working Nero, you can do pretty much everything.
Trying Recode to an image for movie only ... trying to figure out way some have success and others don't. I'll try the image drive then to read it. I believe you can just turn it on to use it and off when your done. The program I've seen mentioned on the game forum for reading images is Daemon Tool. Haven't tried it.
@6Ripper9 Tried changing the file extension to .iso, but had no luck. Same results .. won't play past the first disclaimer screen. I have gotten an image to play but it was run through Recode on "movie only". Played fine. Tested it with Image Drive (Thanks for the tip cyprusrom). I usually do "entire movie" and have yet to get one to play right from the image file. Do you backup movie only or entire movie? and Which version of Nero & Recode are you using?
@dewey650 If it's a movie, I do Movie Only, as I usually don't find special features interesting enough to watch more than once. But, if it's a television series, then I do Entire DVD. I can't seem to figure out why you're having this problem. If the progress bar reaches the end and gives you Image Created Successfully box, then you'd think the movie would work without any hitches. Is it only one movie you're having problems with, or different movies. Another thing you could do is go into Recodes Configuration, and under the general tab. put a check mark on "Offer to save detailed report after successful burn process" to see if any problems were encountered. Sometimes, even if a problem occurs, the burn will still be successful, but result in some bad sections on the disc.
