Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

    http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in next reply.

Thank you so much! i deleted the ones from hijack this, and my computer is no longer acting up. The virus however is still there as antivir picked it up and blocked it, and when i searched for it using "search" i could still find it.. but atm no more problems (very odd)

will post the next log in a minute... just about to start scan

    Hi,

ok good. time to run step 2 (the clean) of the smitfraud fix.
needs to run in safe mode.

to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart, chose the first option from the list: safe mode

once at the safe mode desktop, start Smitfraud and this time select option 2 from the list. it will also produce a log. please post that log and a new hjt log in next reply.

    hi,

looks good. read this about the ask jeeves toolbar, you can remove it via add/remove program panel:

    http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/installations/askjeeves-banner/

    do i see 2 antivirus?

    Common Files\Symantec
    AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

having more than one anti-malware app is ok (2 is plenty)but you only need 1 antivirus app on your computer. more isnt better in this case. i would remove one via the add/remove programs panel.
you can delete the smitfraud tool
    -------------------------------
last: if all is good you can make new restore points:

One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is agood idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

    (winXP)

    1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)

Thank you sooo much you are the greatest lifesaver ever- i was going to have my computer wiped tomorrow, but now it seems to be fixed!

I have norton antivirus and antivir, because norton didn't pick up the virus the first time. Is it ok to keep both?

I will deleted smitfraud, but should i keep hijack this or can it be deleted too?

I will also sort out the restore points- system restore was origionally how i tried to fix the virus, but as you said, it wouldnt let me go "back in time" further than one day. should be ok now though. thank you so much!

one more question- my computer is working fine and everything looks good, however when i run up a search for "downloader" (how i origionally confirmed my virus) it still comes up. Is this something i should be worrying about?

    hi nathaliea,

good glad to help. Anti-virus may detect some of the smitfraud infection but none will remove it. anti-trojan apps also may detect portions of it but cant remove it. smitfraudfix is the tool for automated removal.

Its important to have both anti-virus and anti-malware(spyware)apps on your computer, both will cover different threats although there is some overlap.

in answer to your question you only need one anti-virus on your computer. you can have more than 1 anti-malware app. in your first log i see AVG antispyware:
    C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

but i dont see it in the last log. did you remove it? you should keep it and uninstall one of your anti-virus.
    you can delete hjt also.
