I was wondering what are the problems that come with a hitachi. I did a 59 one for a friend a couple weeks ago and he has been complaining that he gets the can't read disc multiple times before it loads.

i've had a hitachi 78fk for the past 3 years and love it. it has never broken down, works flawlessly, but is a bit loud (maybe all the drives are, i don't know). i have a number of backups that always load as long as i use verbatim discs.

Hitachis' are infamous for this problem after they have been flashed. The "Open Tray" issue can be solved by a POT calibration on the laser. And yes, they are a bit loud. ;)

Really? interesting. i think i may have just gotten lucky then. i did buy a couple of 78fk's as spares just in case, but so far, so good. i'll knock on wood that things have been fine so far.

Versions below the 78s is where I've seen the problem most.
    59s and 47s.

ive got a 59 and dont have any issues( i did have to clean the lens once) i think hitachis get a bad rep because they're some of the oldest drives out there so obviously they've been used more. i dont get more than 3 years out of an optic drive for my pc so i dont expect more than that for my xbox.

I'm not trying to give Hitachis a bad rep. The info I shared was from my personal experience. I have flashed a lot of Hitachis for customers and when I test them out after a flash, I usually end up doing a POT calibration because of the Open Tray error. And in some cases down the road, the customer brings the 360 back to me for a laser/dvd drive replacement.
