All of a sudden my drive is not being recognized when I tried to re-install it. It is not assigned a drive letter either. It shows up in my device manager. I have even tried to install a new one and I still get the problem. I get a message about the drive not insatlling properly and that I may encounter problems. Any suggestions?

    In Windows2000/XP

On your desktop you have an icon "My Computer" - right click on that and from the drop down menu click on "Manage"

Look on the left side of the new Window that opens and you should see something called "Disk Management"

You can now see info about the various IDE and ATAPI devices. Look to see if the Hard Disk is enabled.

You should see something like Disk0 - Basic - 100Gb - Online. Disk1 - Basic - 100Gb - Online. The 100Gb obviously is dependent on how large your drives are.

Make sure the drive that is giving issues is actually enabled!

    No worries.

OK. Sounds like a software issue - I would say broken CD/RW - but you say a new one is doing the same thing.

Would suggest downloading the newest chipset drivers and installing those. Depending on what your PC is - it's going to be either VIA/Intel/nVidia/SIS. So install those and see if that sorts it.

If that doesn't help try uninstalling the IDE/ATAPI driver from Device Manager - then reboot and let Windows re-detect all your devices and see if it can sort itself out.

Thanks for all the help! The second fix regarding deleting the "upperfilters" and "lowerfilters" worked.
I've been trying to find the answer for about four weeks now. You've been the only one with anything other than the typical uninstall, reboot, download new drivers, etc. Thanks Again!
