Hi. I tried looking around but I couldnt find someone with a similar problem so I'm posting my request here. I have an HP Pavillion Entertainment PC with a DVD RW drive. The Laptop is around one year old and I've burned around 100 DVDs with it and only recently I started to use it to play movies. The problem is that it will only play for some time (between 2 and 15 min) before it starts making weird noises while spinning the disk and the image freezes and the only way around is to manually eject the disc, pretty much like you got a badly scratched disc (though this has happened even with mint DVDs). If I try to play it again it wont even load. Funny thing is that if I let it cool down (that is shutting down the comp or at least suspending it for a good while) and try again, it will give again a few minutes of uninterrupted playing until it freezes again. After watching a couple of movies like this (10 minutes at a time during a few days) Im fed up with it, so Im asking for help. Im afraid these symptoms may indicate the drive has reached the end of its useful life, but that shouldnt be the case. It's been only a year and I havent used or abused it half as much as I see other people doing, so hopefully there's a way to fix it. Thanks for the help in advance guys.
Small update in my case: I just borrowed a DVD from the public library. It's so badly scratched that you could use it to polish raw furniture, yet the driver read it and played it without as much as a hiccup. Now Im really puzzled. Please help!
But.. one thing you haven't mentioned in your first post... Are the disks that are giving you troubles your own burns?
Weird, I could've sworn I mentioned it. The disks that give problems are movies I rented or bought. I usually have no trouble reading discs I've burnt.
Strange indeed.. sounds like some drm in your machine mucking about with the disk drives.. A symptom of starforce and securom.
