Recently when I boot my laptop up it says 'New hardware found' and states that my Sony DVD+-RW DW-D56A needs a driver.

The drive has always been there.

I located a firmware update but again when rebooting it tries to locate a driver.

I have tried 'rolling back' the driver but states, no driver to roll back to.

I have tried to 'system restore' but it wont restore to an earlier date.

I therefore think I need a good original driver but can't seem to find one on the net.

Has anyone an idea were a driver can be found.

Sorry for such a basic question, and thanx in advance for any assistance.

    Thanks for the reply ddp.

I have only one physical drive, the Sony as described above.

Spookily though, my device manager shows two, the Sony and an 'AVX CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device' which I have no idea about.

When I boot up, the machine makes no mention of this 'AVX' thing but says the Sony is new hardware.

I don't have a driver for it and Windows doesn't seem to have a generic one??

uninstall both drives from device manager than restart windows so it can load it's driver & also see if it loads 1 drive or 2.

Did that, uninstalled both drives as you suggested.

When I rebooted the machine it installed TWO drives???

It asked to install drivers for the Sony but couldn't find any. But upon checking Device Manager it shows to be working properly??

On the other hand, the 'non existent AVX' drive has this in the AVX 'device status'........

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

I don't understand why I am shown as having TWO drives and the Sony wont install its own driver

    Confused?!?

    Thanx ddp.

I did what you suggested and 'both' drives reinstalled!

The Sony asked for a driver again so I scoured Windows and found the one in Win\Sys32\drivers allowed itself to be installed.

When I then rebooted the Sony was not dtected by 'My Computer', AnyDVD or DVD43, but spookily showed up as working correctly in Device Manager.

I uninstalled it again, rebooted and again, obviously found 'new hardware'. I didn't try to locate a driver and it seems to work okay, but everytime I boot up, it wants the driver.

I think that the driver I installed from within windows must have been too old, or the complete wrong one.

I still don't know what the 'AVX' drive relates to but I'm not really concerned. All I think I need is the driver for my Sony DVD drive.

Any ideas?, oh and sorry for the double posting, didn't realise what I was doing :(

that 'axv' device should be a virtual drive created by the software Alcohol 120%

Wow creaky what a sharp reply.

When I uninstalled it though, it just reinstalled itself upon boot up.

I take it that its okay just to leave it then?
If I wanted rid of it how would I do that, by uninstalling Alcohol?

Do you have any idea where I would get a driver for my Sony to stop it requesting one every time I reboot.

    Thanks in anticipation

nah, you're alright, i knew what you meant. there should be no problem with the virtual drive. When i first used Alcohol 120% it took me ages to figure out what had created the virtual drive. it wasn't a problem it was just bugging me to find out what it was :)

Okay, so that's one little problem (or at least, one little thing bugging me) sorted out.

The main thing now is to get this damn drive to stop asking for a driver!!

I've looked all over but to no avail.

Are you any good on the 'driver trail'?

To be honest, I think I messed this up when I've been trying to 'upgrade' after reading about booktyping!, but I don't have the original driver.

i think the avx/alcohol 120 is what is causing the problem. uninstall alcohol 120 to see if windows still asks for a driver.

I uninstalled Alcohol, then the 'AVX' drive. I also deleted any reference to Alcohol from the registry.
When I rebooted, it reinstalled the AVX drive and still asked for a driver for the Sony, so I'm no further on really.
