    I recently plugged in my Lexar Jump drive. the computer recognized the new driver and prompted to install it. although the jump drive isn't supposed to install anything, i continued to do so. somehow i got it to work. But the problem now is that my cdr and dvdrw stopped recognizing my discs. at one point under the list of drives the disc showed as unidentified. Normally, the title of the disc would show up. I should mention that before the jump drive installation, there was a warning about it might affect other drive if i continue installing the jump drive-- i did.
    Now, i don't know how to restore my drives. I went to system restore and checked the earlier dates to resptore the system. after that the drives are still not reconizing the disc. Any idea?

    See if this helps:

    Uninstall the IDE channel that the drives are connected to, reboot the PC, the drives will be redetected and reinstalled.

    Short guide if needed...

    Or you can try just uninstalling the drive/s

    Hello John;

    Thanks a million. You're suggestion worked wonderfully. Now, do you know my USB Jump drive always prompts me to install the software in XP but not on my Vista and Mac? :)

    Again, thanks for the great help.

    Alot of flash drives now have software packages that come with them that prompt you to install the software upon first use, unless you really have a need for it, I would recommend not to install it. The problem is that every time you plug-in the drive you're nagged by the software to perform an install of it, to stop this from happening, cancel any screen that pops up when the drive is plugged in, explore the contents of the drive and look for an autorun.inf file and simply rename it's extension.

    EX: autorun.ing

    Doing this should prevent the prompts to install anything.

    Windows Vista or Mac OS may simply prevent thses types of software installs for safty reasons, unless they are intentionally initiated by you.

    Hi, John;

    I followed your suggestion to stop the wizard installation by cancelling it.But by doing so, the computer (XP)did not recognize the USB drive; therefore preventing me from exploring it. I plugged the USB in my Vista and was able to explore it. All I saw was a Secure II installation. I right click it and didn't see anything that was close to autorun.inf. I guess it wasn't that big of a deal if I couldn't use the USB in XP, but ignoring it was not my thing. Not being able to know how to fix it bugged me. Times like this I wish I should have taken computer classes instead of creative writing. :(

    Hi, John;

    It seems like that my XP asks asks to install software with anything that i plug in the USB drive. I tried to use my web cam ( driver already installed) but the install wizard kept on comming up. I tried to stop the installation but somehow the computer won't recognize the camera even though the driver was already installed. Any thoughts on this?

    Try this. Couldn't hurt. Disconnect your web cam. Uninstall the software. Reboot the computer. Load the software. At some point you should be prompted to connect the web cam. Do this only when prompted. If at any time windows asks if you want it to look for drivers for the web cam. click cancel. The software should finish installing with the correct drivers. The device should then work correctly and windows will no longer keep looking for a driver for the device. If you keep unplugging the web cam from the USB port, Windows may keep wanting to look for a new driver for the new hardware found and want to search for a new driver every time you start windows. I'm no pro like john is, but, this is how I would handle the sitituation. Hope this helps! Cheers!

    I would go ahead and install the Secure II application on your XP system (it's safe and at times wise to do so), all this application does is allow you to store data on your usb device and give you the option to encrypt the data so that it can't be read or accessed by any one else but you (you will be asked for a password to see what was encrypted).

    XP will either try to install drivers for any hardware you add to your system (if it contains the software) or ask you to provide the software/drivers in order for the hardware to be recognized and function properly, this is normal.

    It's possible that the software may of been corrupted, so XP will ask for a reinstall of it. I agree with QuikDraw on this one, "Disconnect your web cam. Uninstall the software. Reboot the computer. Load/reinstall the software".
