I recently dropped my 500gb WD external HD like about 2ft. I plug it to comp. It would spin. Later I tried it again, it works. However I think some files are damaged or gone cuz I cant opened a rar file on it. It would say cant find the rar. I cant backup my stuff cuz i only got 30gb left on my comp. hard drive. I have about 250gb on the 500gb hd. Is there any programs to fix the hard drive or anything. Any recommendations?
same problem here i dropped mine (same as yours but only 250gb) just now but mine ent workin again yet i dropped mine around 2-3 feet this is serious it has every song every video every program every game every emulator EVERYTHING i need on it any suggestions of a fix would be great its really needed.
First off, Wow, how did you manage to drop it that distance. @ Spartian28. If it still works, I would suggest immediatly getting an other drive and backing up all the data on that. As for restoring, try utilities such as FreeRestore (i think thats what its called) @ Gdot73. Does your drive spin up or not?
i managed to drop it coz is on a table next to my pc and as i walked past it i caught a wire that was dangling ill never make that mistake again. and it seems to be trying to spin and making a clicking noise i can make a video of it if you need. thanks
heres a video i jus made u can hear exactly whats happening http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnTBBMf14m4 or http://www.dailymotion.com/Sterling2k7/video/8030793
Unfortunatly it looks like your drive is actually dead. You could try to take it out of the enclosure and pop it into a computer and see if it does anything as this could also be a power issue or you can take professional data recovery help. Sometimes dropping it again on carpet on the side from about 1 foot helps unjam the head but I would try that as a last resort.
i hope i can recover everything theres no screws to take it out of its enclosure theres a little hole at the back with a padlock sign on it there could be a key needed to open it? any other suggestions or suggestions on opening the casing are appreciated

You gotta use Norton partition magic which costs $$, If your on Vista you can use Vista's built in partitioning or my favorite, a Linux Boot CD called Gparted Live. All of these allow you to partition without losing data.
http://howtoforge.com/partitioning_with_gparted Download Gparted Live from this link. Its the same version used in the tutorial: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-livecd-0.3.3-0.iso?modtime=1165447791&big_mirror=0 You will also need to be able to burn the ISO to CD using some utility such as Sonic RecordNow or Roxio. These utilities are usually preinstalled on a PC.
Like I said a couple times before, it is a boot CD. You will need to boot your computer with the CD. Follow the tutorial.
Can i use imgburn to burn the iso on a cd. How do i get it to boot cd when i restart. Will i still be able to look at the guide when i do it?
You will either have to memorize the guide or print it out. As for burning it, Imgburn will work. As for booting from CD, what computer do you have? I could help you out more if I knew the model.
