I was about to get a ds lite when I started hearing complaints from people all over the world about the left side of the hinge on their ds lite is cracking and they have to pay 50$ US to get it repaired. So far I hear its only been happening to Polar White DS lite's. Apparently the crack doesn't affect gameplay, but I think a lot of people are still getting upset because they spend all that money for a shiny new DS lite and then something like this happens. It's really disheartening because Nintendo usually builds high quality products. If anyone else is experiencing the crack let everyone know. maybe we can start a riot or go on strike against Nintendo (not that I don't like Nintendo, but they're blaming the damage on the users) http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/17/nintendo-ds-lite-cracks-on-hinge/ http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=24439 http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=ds&message.id=2477489 http://dslcracked.awardspace.com/ http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/poll/cracked-ds-lite-poll-187815.php There a lot more sites about the issue just type in "ds lite hinge crack" on a search engine
thankfully mine hasn't cracked (knock on wood). i get the feeling it *could* be due to people using it rougher. its not like the original DS.. this one is more fragile compared to it
A lot of people think the cracking is occuring because they open their ds lite all the way so that it's like this__ when it should be like this_/. Also, I think nintendo knew about the problem before the ds lite launched because they postponed the release of the coloured ds lite's because they couldn't maintain quality standards and they don't have the crack, but the white ds lite was released on time and it has the crack.
My brother opens it flat all the time. When I told him about it he said it's the owner's fault, not Nintendo.
if it's the owners fault then a lot of people are wasting their time taking excellent care of their ds' because they are cracking anyway. and the crack isn't covered by the warranty. It's been happening to hundreds or even thousands of people and it happens in the same spot everytime so it has to be a design flaw i hope the coloured ds lite's don't have this problem. BTW does anyone know when the coloured ds lite's will launch in america? I'm dying to get one
DS Lite's are not meant to be opened "flat".. if you take note it actually puts stress on both hinges. I agree that nintendo should put some kind of "stopper" to make sure it doesn't open all the way.. but theres only so much you can do with hardware this small. colored DS lite's in the US may launch as soon as Christmas, no one knows.
Both me and my younger brother have black DS lites and have not had this problem. DS Lites are designed to be opened flat, there is two positions, like this \__ and --__ the reason the ds clicks when you make it flat is so that the screen has a way of staying up when in the \__ position. Note that most people do not open it flat though as it generally does need to be done.
Gee, guys, don't you know about dead pixels and the R button cases. I had to change my Lite 3 times till i got one without any problem...
I'd just blame that on bad luck. Besides, a dead pixel isn't all that uncommon, considering I have one on my DS and one on my laptop. I don't even notice them unless I'm intentionally looking for them.
well, my both laptops, and a desktop with an lcd, don't have any dead pixels, and i believe it's highly abnormal to say that it's normal to have dead pixels , Then you buy a new shiny dslite and discover that it's faulty for 3 times in a row??? Call it extremely bad luck. The guy at the store told me that i wasn't the only one, he got about 10pc. in 10 days. i got two units with dead pixels and one with a faulty R button, that's my experience...
I didn't say dead pixels were normal, just that it isn't uncommon, which is why some manufacturers of LCD monitors and laptop LCDs require that at least three dead pixels be present before a warranteed replacement is made. My laptop, my parent's LCD monitor and laptop, as well as both my DS and my brother's DS Lite all have a single dead pixel each. Even my brother's blue DS had a dead pixel. It was never bad enough for us to ask for replacements. On a side note, all of the dead pixels were blue except for the one on my brother's DS Lite, which was red.
I just heard some good news check it out for yourselves http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/top/ni...-free-repairs-for-cracked-ds-lites-188778.php I think it's safe to buy a DS lite again I'm glad because the waiting was killing me. I can't wait for the coloured ds lite's so im gonna buy a white one, I hope the white doesn't fade after a while
i've had mine since release date.. no problems whatsoever . Glad to know nintendo is repairing these, because after reading over it a little more, it definitely looks like a manufacturer defect
when the original ds was launched the single dead pixel thing was a pretty common defect. mine has a single pixel that stays bright green forever
i got my DS lite a few days after release, it was and is fine. Nintendo is fixing the broken hinge problem for free: http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/ninten...-free-repairs-for-cracked-ds-lites-188778.php
