k, so i custom installed windows 7 onto a partition. it installed successfully, and prepared my desktop. It seemed perfect, i was on the desktop, i installed my usb wireless receiver. Then when it went to restart, the windows logo showed, it made the sound like it was going to the logon screen, but it didnt. The screen was black and all u can see/do is move the mouse. It remained like this for 10 minutes until i decided to shut it down ive tried booting it several times, but it always does the same thing. EDIT: on normal startup, when i assume the logon screen is up, i put in my password, and it loads my background, with a 1 inch black border on all sides. No mouse movements, no desktop icons, nothing else. But if i click the windows button on the keyboard, and go left once, and hit enter, it will shut my pc down. So i know its there, but i just cant seem to see it or anything :/ Why? how do i fix it?
custom installed, as in clean install, as in, not upgrade xD but heres an update, i did something to make both my vista and 7 crash... So i wiped the drives, then installed vista again, and 7 also they worked perfectly, but once i updated to SP2 for vista, the problems for 7 came back again so im about to undo the sp2 update and see if that changes anything EDIT: After uninstalling the SP2 update, the problem in 7 remains still... I dont understand what the problem could be
I'm sure it has to do with a conflict with the bootloaders of the OS's. May I ask why you want to dualboot Vista and 7? It just seems a bit redundant. Anyway if you follow this guide and the installations still have problems then you either have a hardware problem (unlikely) or a problem with your discs (more likely). Edit: lol forgot to link to the guide! http://lifehacker.com/5126781/how-to-dual-boot-windows-7-with-xp-or-vista
Yup just tried it. and this time when i went to install 7, it went through the 5 processes, and then where it was supposed to start putting in my info (username, password, time zone, etc.) that screen never came up, the windows 7 startup logo appeared, then a black screen for 15 minutes... well atm im preferring vista, i want to dual boot because i dont want to commit myself to 7 just yet. i want to keep both, see the benefits of each, and eventually choose one. my friends said it might be the bootloaders, how would i fix that?
Are you using a Upgrade disc by chance? And is this a downloaded .iso from like a University site, Microsoft site? Or is it a retail disc. If its a downloaded copy you could have a corrupted iso. Any just my own 2 cents, Windows 7 is head and shoulders better than Vista. Better XP compatibilty for one, runs faster on most hardware because of the lower hardware requirements. Heck even Microsoft said Vista was a botched OS. Do yourself a favor and just go with 7, if you want Vista that bad install it in a virtual pc program on the pc.
I just like vista better until i can accustom to 7, but anyway, problem resolved, they are both successfully installed on my pc. The problem was that I had changed the drive paths for the hardrives. This is what caused the problem with the bootloader, but it's corrected now.
