yesterday i tried to burn my first dual layer discs and i made three coasters....yay!!

i'll start off by saying that they are memorex and made in taiwan
(i know that will be the first hit against me)

the first time i tried to use dvdshrink but it only said that the disc was a reg 4.7 so i decided to try it anyway. of course it didn't burn right.

so then i moved to nero and tried the same file again and it failed in the same place. that made me wonder if the file i was trying to burn had a problem so i moved to a different movie. when that failed i decided to save the error log and see if anyone had advice as to what is going on.
i've burned about 30 phillips dvd+r on this driver and about 5 lightscribe discs without any problem and i've used shrink/nero to do all the previous burns.

any input would be appreciated as i have more than lifetime supply of those rear view mirror discs

    thanks,

    Joshua

    Hi, maybe this will help

    1) make an iso file of the stuff u want 2 burn (with Imgburn in the build mode) Imgburn is free at Imgburn.com
    2) Use the calculator on Imgburn to get best layer break position
    3) reset imgburn to write mode
    4) Booktype dvd+r d/l to DVD-ROM In Imgburn
    5) Burn image(iso file) with Imgburn
    6) Enjoy !
    7) the disks u r using are Ritek and r pretty good
    8) Imgburn - best there is!

Absolutely, u can do it with Imgburn. In the mode box, it drops down and u will see build , click it and it will then convert the files to iso format. Don't forget 2 use the layer break point calculator 2 get best layer break/transition point. Then after Imgburn does it's job, burn the outputted file with Imgburn in the write mode(same prev box that dropped) U may need 2 see if u can find a tutorial/guide for all of Imgburn's capabilities. Happy hunting

if i have had failures with nero and imgburn are there any other programs that might work for me?

is there also any way to determine if my drive is malfunctioning when it comes to writing dual layer discs over single layer discs?

the nero one looks like it failed after switching to the second layer and the imgburn failed right at 50% as i was at the computer when it started spinning the disc funny.

if anyone has any more suggestions that would be great.

    thanks,
    joshua

    Hi jhhjusa
    CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H20L atapi Port 5 ID 0 DMA: Off
Turn DMA back on for the burner - here's a guide - link

    Disc Manufacturer ID: RITEK,
Switch you dual layer disc to Verbatim. The burn is failing writing to the 2nd layer and these discs may not be compatible w/ your burner.
For dual layer Verbatim is probably the most supported by the different drives firmware.

    Burn process failed at 6x
    Try 4x or 2.4x

Give that a go and let us know.

Check your controllers again. You'll see one maybe a seconardy ide controller that device 0 is listed as being in pio mode.
Unisntall that one and reboot to correct it.

ImgBurn is my preferred program for burning dual layer.

Try that and lower the burn speed.
Still failing then pick up some Verbatims.

It's now time to switch the media.
Looks like these are not compatible w/ your drive.
    Buy Verbatim dual layer only.

If those don't then looks like this drive needs to be replaced to burn dual layer - still under warranty by chance?

Give the Verbs a go - the media may just be the main cause of your failures.

Yep the biggest arguement would be that they don't work. Most best Buys are pretty good about taking back stuff if it's in the 30 day period and w/ a receipt. Plus you can also add that you bought Verbatim and they work.
Verbatim DL media goes on sale every once in while so check the Sunday sale ads to see when they are on sale.

    Glad they worked!

what i am doing right now is shrinking the same iso file down to a 4.7 and burning it to see if there are large differences. if not i'll stick with the DVD+R and leave the dual layers for special occasions ;-)

That's what I do - say the dual layer for the good ones :)
I'd still try returning the Memorex.
