I'm interested in "backing up" my friends DVD's but notice that the dual layer disks are much higher priced than the several hundred blank DVD+-r's I have in my closet. Is there an easy way to rip the layers and put it on a regular dvd+- R? I have the dual layer burner but don't want to shell out the dough for the disks.

There shouldnt be any problems doing that with your existing discs. Heres a link to 2 progs DVD Decrypter this will remove any copy protection and then run the movie through DVD Shrink. Heres a link to get all the info you need to run these progs, follow exactly as written, suggest you print out this guide for further reference.
