I just got a dual layer dvd burner and I want to back up a bunch of AVI's. What program can I use to do this? Most of what I have found only uses dual layer for copying dvd's. I dont want to use nero or EZ CD.
    Cheers,

Do you have a DVD player that plays divX files?

Do you want to be able to play the AVIs on a standalone player?

If you just want to burn the AVIs to a DVD, then any authoring and burning program will do it. It's up to you to determine whether to burn to a single or double layer disk.

I don't understand your reluctance to use Nero if you have it. It burns to either single or double layer. Most freeware burning programs burn only DVD compliant files as iso images.

Post back if you need more info or still have questions.

The best programs for burning dual layer disks are DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn. Both programs only accept ISO (disk image) files as input. This means that you must output an ISO image file from whatever program you're using for them to be able to use it.

What version of Nero are you using? Can you post the last section of your Nero Burn Log that begins with ========s, your name, your program serial number (deleting these before posting).

What brand of DL disks are you using? Verbatim is the best by far w/r to DL disks. Most around here use +R DL. For burning DL disks, it is imperative to have up-to-date burner firmware for a successful quality burn. Have you updated your firmware at all? Post back your burner brand and model and we'll help you find the newest firmware if you need help in doing so. The firmware version is the 3 or 4 letter combination of letters and numbers that appear immediately after the name of your burner. For example, in DVD Decrypter, the descriptive name of your burner will appear on the top line of the right hand column/window.

There really isn't any reason to attempt another DL burn until we make sure your firmware is up to date and that your DL media is an acceptable quality media.

In my opinion, the best way to backup a commercial DVD onto DL media is to use DVD Decrypter.

Set the mode to ISO Read and rip the disk to your HDD.
Set the mode to ISO Write, select the MDS file that accompanies the ISO file you ripped, and burn.

Again don't do this until we get the burner firmware sorted out.

Is there any problem with Ritek dl's? so far have not got one right (came free with burner ). Going to try decrypter next, have used nero: no good. Just want to make sure trying with riteks (b-4 they're gone) will get it figured out when I get verbs.
    lite-on 1693s
    kosa firmware(newest)`
( I take it sony makes this drive, nero & info tool says burned by a sony ####.)

actech, Liteon made the drive for Sony. Sony doesn't make any drives themselves. They're currently using Benqs in their newest models.

Ritek DL disks are problematic for some burners. There is no doubt that the best DL disks are Verbatim +R DL. The Ricoh and Ritek disks don't even come close in quality.

When burning any DL media it is imperative to have the latest firmware flashed to your burner.

If you have a Sony DRU 800A then the current firmware is KSOY and is here:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=30

If you have a Liteon 1693 the newest firmware is KSOB and is located here:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=17

It is also important to booktype your DL disks as DVD-ROM to increase their playability in standalone DVD players. There are many threads dealing with this here in the forums.

The Booktype utility program for Liteon based burners is here:

Had it backwards. How is it if you go to lite-on the newest firmware is kosa but you has a link for kosb? Are these safe firmwares(stupid question this is a.d.) I now have to look thru a bunch of cds to find a copy of decrypter. been using nero/shrink occasionally dvdfab decrypter for ever with no need for anything else. could have sworn it was in my downloads folder ( got shrink back to like 2.?) I think what i had was a 3.3-5 somewhere in that area will that work ( i know no updates)
