Wow, this may be my first post. In fact, this is the first time I've logged into this forum since: That's a good thing though because that means I haven't run into any problems Anyway, my newest toy, a brand new laptop, came with a dual layer DVD writer drive. What's the best DL media to buy? I know everyone hates Memorex, as do i, but does their quality still suck on DL discs? From what i've read so far, Verbatim makes good ones? Has anyone tried Fuji? As of this writing, Fuji and Memorex are on sale this week at Bestbuy. Thanks in advance.
I highly recommend the 2.4X - 4X Verbatim DVD+R DL. This is one of the best DL media I've used so far, and according to my experiences - all of my backups are flawlessly. On the other hand, the Fuji should be another good media as well. However, I have not tested and or used any of them. Lastly, I can safely say that; "you can dump that Memosux period."
Oh, and I forgot to mention one thing, make sure to change the "book type" or set the "bitsetting" into DVD-ROM format. This is one of the safest and best format to go if your dvd burner is capable of changing any DVD+R/+R DL. Again, I highly recommend changing the book type.

An FYI: I've been really loyal to the DVD5 discs that Fuji makes. They've provided no problems whatsoever. However, on older DVD players, there is the occassional skip. This is why I thought i would mention Fuji for DVD9s. But yeah, i've always disliked memorex
@Mr_Pink, You're welcome. Yeah... I love to book type all of my backups simply because it plays beautifully on all of my stand alone dvd players. Yes... I've backed up roughly 30 backups using the 2.4X Verbatim DVD+R DL "Made In Singapore" media flawlessly. Like I said on my earlier reply above, if you want good/high quality DL media, then get the 2.4X - 4X Verbatim DL - I highly recommend it, not only that, but it is definitely awesome and it's more superior than any other DL media so far. Again, about the Fuji DL media, I've heard that it's good and or a high decent media, but I have not yet tested them out yet. I'm sure I'll end up grabing a pack of 3 blanks to test it out, if the price is right. On the other hand, I, too, love the Fuji 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan". As a matter of fact, the Fuji 8X DVD+R "M.I.J" is genuine Taiyo Yuden - it is made/manufactured by Yuden as well.
Mr_Pink, from what I've been hearing around here,those Memorex +DL are made by ritek-for now. For how long, who knows? Everyone know how famous memorex is on using low quality sources. I'd still get the verbatims. They go on sale about once a month or 2 at office depot for about $3.50 apiece. You may want to keep your eye on that store.I love OD,and I am very partial to their +r 8x 100 pack spindles-riteks.

Those verbatim MKM's are the only dual layer I have burned,just like alkohol. Ricohjpn is very good in the regular +r discs,not sure on the +DL discs.Should be pretty close to the riteks. I wouldn't trust those cmags or the phillips MID codes.Specially on the high prices of the dual layer media.
I didn't rate them, I only provided manufacturer info ... I found it odd that Philips branded discs wern't produced by Philips
philips sux and you don't need to hear me rant about ANYTHING CMC MAG related i have also only used the Verbatim DLs with NO PROBLEMS/ISSUES at all~ i would be willing to try the Ritek manufactured ones, but, that won't be until i finish up my limited supply of Verbs DL~ stick with what others have PROVEN are winners...VERBATIM DLs all the way~
I haven't used any DL media so far because I usually only burn the movie title -- no extras. Am I correct in assuming that if I wanted to copy the whole shebang and did not want to compress it, I would need to use DL media (if it is over the 4.3g? Is there really anything to gain by copying the whole thing, or do most of you do it because you want the added scenes, trailers, etc.?
If you truly want an exact copy of a DVD, you will need to use a DL DVD .. And yes, some of us like the extras, trailers, etc .. in your words, "the whole shebang" .. Personally, I don't mind the compression, since I'm only watching it on a 27" Tv .. And most of my copies are for my granddaughters to watch (they aren't too picky)
Yeah, I agree. I want to copy the entire DVD. The only thing I'd do is ommit unnecessary audio files (after a while, they add up and a good chunk of memory has been removed). I'm anxious to burn a DL disc. I'd like to know that I'm copy a DVD9 without any compression. I'm just waiting for a good deal to come along. The current Bestbuy price is like $63 for 10!
I agree with the price. I might someday want to try it though my chief financial officer (aka my wife) might have some say in spending $60+ for 10 blanks. She looked at my blank stash this weekend and wanted to know why I have 200 blank verbatims. I told her don't blame me, the "verbatim guru" on AD told me to buy them.
I finally tried the verbatim media today. Now, even though I never had any problems with my Fujis, I'm gonna sell my remaining Fuji stash (brand new and sealed 50 discs) and await the arrival of my 100 pack of Verbatim. I got it off of Amazon for 50 bucks! At BB this week, they're offering a 3 pack of Fuji DL for 20 bucks. I know i asked it earlier, but has anyone tried the Fuji DL yet?
Unless you want those Fuji discs really bad, I'd wait .. Best Buy will have them on sale again for $14.99/3 .. Also Office Depot should have another Verbatim sale in the next month or so . last time they had 3 packs of DL Verbatim for $19.99 (buy 1, get 1 free) ...
