I am about to venture into burning dual layer dvd's to be played on a stand alone player and I'm wondering if there are some specifics I should be aware of. I've had people tell me, do this or don't do that, all that does is confuse a person. This is my first effort and I want to get it right, so, I need some advise. Here's what I'm using, Plextor 760a DL DVD drive [IDE] Verbatim DVD+R DL media and I'll be burning using DVD Decrypter. Hope someone can give me some good tips. Appreciate all responces. slo_
Good choice on the media - that's the only good brand out there. What format is your source material in? Generally, the advice given around here is to have it in ISO format if possible. Then use IMGBurn 2.0 to open it, selecting the MDS file rather than the ISO. If you don't do that e.g. your source is a VIDEO_TS folder or IFO/VOB files, you will need to set the layer break using PGCEdit.

Hi there, I have used Memorex (made by Ritek) Dual Layer media with very good results. My source is the Video_TS folder and I haven't had to set any layer breaks. Dunker could you explain me waht do yo mean be setting layer breaks and burning from ISO images....?
Verbatim is the best media to use. If you'll read through all the forums here, you'll see that most people have a lot of problems with the other brands of DL media. For some reason, I've never been able to use IMGBurn, to do anything. I burn all my DL discs, using nothing but DVD Decrypter, and AnyDVD running in the background, to bypass the copy protections, especially on the newer movies. DVD Decrypter will not break the copy protections, on newer movies, by itself. I've read that Plextor drives require an app called PlexTools, to do Booktyping (Bitsetting). If you booktype a +R, +RW, or +R DL disc to DVD Rom, it will be more compatible with standalone players. Movies you buy are booktyped to DVD Rom. That's why they play in almost every player. Here's a how-to on setting layer breaks properly. This assumes your source is VOBs and IFOs, not an ISO file. Basically, if your original rip was an ISO/MDS (some other image formats work too, but ISO is by far the most universal), then your burning software (if it's any good) will be able to figure the layer break on its own. The MDS file has all that info. If not, then you need to set it manually via PGCEdit, then write an ISO/MDS yourself for IMGBurn or whatever to actually burn.
