Which DVD player will play DL discs? I looked at Walmart and
none of the DVD players said they were compatible with DL.

I bought a Sony from WalMart and it plays my Dual Layer backups perfectly. I had previously got the Sanyo from them but it would not play DL's it would freeze up, returned it and got the Sony and have no problems. Also, you may want to check out the cheapie Cyberhomes, I have two of the 30.00 ones and they play DL's fine too.

    Hi sd72667.

DVD players do not list DL compatibility, at least none that I have seen/bought. The DVD players will list DVD+ or DVD- compatibility, along with mp3, etc.

If your drive supports booktyping, then any DVD player should work. That is providing you booktype all your DVD+ and DVD+ DL media to DVD-ROM.

Take a look at the link below. It may help you in choosing the right DVD player to play those backups.

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php

BTW Most pre 2004 DVD players do not recognize DVD+ or - DL media. That's because burning DL media was just coming about. Most newer DVD players should not have a problem with it, providing + or - media is supported.

    DL playing players at Walmart:

Don't go by their specs. Look for the Magnavox MWD 200F which Walmart has Skid loads of. It is very small. It's so light, when the eject tray pops out and place your backup in it-it almost flips over, LOL

    I paid $37 for it,but now they're around $32

I play DL's on mine,as well as any backup from my benqs. I know of at least 5 family members and friends with this same player and no playback issues as well. I recommended them to them, and they are happy campers!

The only negative: No progressive scan!

I was in there yesterday, and they had tons of cyberhomes. They should do the trick. One nice thing about walmart- No questions asked if you return anything?

I know catfreak doesn't like those cyberhome stand alone players, but I'd buy one if I needed one right now.

Check this site out. Find the model numbers of some of those drives and look them up here:

I left my feed back there on that magnavox.

Actually my Sony DVD player read on the box that it would play DVD +R,
but it has trouble with DL media. I always booktype my DVD media with
the lovily Benq 1650 and use nothing but the best media. I figure the new DVD players should be more compatible. Thanks guys for the help and I'll check out videohelp.com

Confirm that issue using the Benq 1650 drive to play that DL backup from your PC.Make sure the 1650 plays it perfect,in the areas that your sony has trouble with.

What's the exact issue? Freezing/Skipping/OR No Disc inserted error?

Benqs are phenomenal booktyping drives. If that sony recognizes that DL backup, but has issues during playback-Then it may be something else like a dirty laser lens.

If you get a No Disc Inserted error:
Then most likely format issue, and once in a great while these bookyped backups from benqs will run into one of those players.

    Are you sure it's booktyped?

I helped someone last month with the same Benq 1650. It's suppose to booktype by it's default settings, but his didn't. I use q-suite 2.0 and know my backups are booktyped dvd-rom.

Here's a tool to see if they are actually being booktyped-and it's free:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm

    Here's what mine looks like:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:YUDEN000-T02-000]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
    Manufacturer ID : [YUDEN000]
    Media Type ID : [T02]
    Product Revision : [Not Specified]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
    Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also use Q-suite to booktype and DVD identifier. I usually get
a no disc error and once in a while it will get to the play screen,
but thats it. I did backup Narnia on DL last night and it worked
great, only one freeze, probably at the Layer break.

What programs are using using just for your Dual Layer backups?

There are variations between burn engines and some stand alone players can pick it out.

Some programs also better for DL backups, than for Single layer backups/and vice versa.

I know Nero6 has trouble with DL backups, usually at the layer break. That's why I don't use it.

Nero does not work for me, Decrypter, ImgBurn, Blindwrite, CopytoDVD or CloneDVD all work fine, but Nero nothing but coasters.

What combination of those programs do you use just for DL backups?

I use dvd decrypter using Mode ISO read and write.Very effective, 1 program DL backups.I don't do a whole lot of DL media.

Imgburn, created by lightningUK-just like dvd decrypter: Is suppose to handle DL burning better than dvd decrypter. Use dvd decrypter: Mode ISO read to harddrive/open up IMGburn/locate those MDS files and burn away.
