Well this is a dumb question but here it is. I want to buy a dvd drive so that I can burn my dvds to my computer. And also burn some anime to some dvds. Now what is it I'm exactly supposed to buy?

I was checking at Circuit City.com and Best Buy.com and I am getting kind of confused.

Am I supposed to buy a DVD Rom, DVD Duplicator, or DVD-RW Drive.

Remember I just want something to help me Put DVDs on my computer like in avi, ogm, or mkv. And also something to help put avi's, ogm, or mkvs to a dvd.

Sorry for the dumb question but I didn't want to buy something at have it not do what I want. Especially for 100 bucks.

Hi!I think a normal DVD writer will suit you best.A DVD ROM drive is to read DVD/CD only and doesn't have any writing capabilities.A duplicator is better for those who copy/write extensively and that i guess would be a bit more expensive than a normal DVD-RW drive. You can have a decent DVD-RW drive for less than 40 bucks if you look well and if you fall on a good deal.I do back-up some movies, burn some AVI,MKV,etc files myself and my two actual drives(Benq 1650 and LG 4167B)do the job very well. Now if you are ready to spend around 100 bucks for a drive, then you can go with Plextor DVD-RW drives which are known as the "cadillac" in drives. If not, then you can go with Benq or Lite-on drives which can cost less than half the price of a Plextor DVD-RW drive but which are also among the best ones.

    Hope it helped,

    Vincent.

Thx man for the help. I really appreciate it. And if I can save 50 bucks on one of those I'll take it.

I had a plextor PX-712A that I loved little pricey but good. BenQ is a great choice the 1650 or 1655 or even the 1640 is good. I have the 1655. Lite on is a great one too the SHW 160P6S or SOHW 1633S those are older model numbers but i think they are still around. I do not know if you will find these at best buy or compusa. I would check with newegg.com they are a good company and very well priced.
I would suggest getting a second drive for pulling the backup off the disk I have heard doing this saves the life of your burner not totally sure on this but does sound logical. For that I have a Lite on I forget the model number it came with the smart ripping technology.
Make sure you always use good media Verbatrim, or Taiyo Yuden is all i use. I also never burn above 4X the slower you burn the better it comes out.
Now to make sure it can do what you want you need to make sure you have the proper software to do that just do a search on this site avi to dvd etc... this site is loaded with great info and do not be afraid to ask question most are here to help.
good luck hope this help you out.
