I know this type of question has been asked before but the answer always seems to depend on what type of drives you have and how you use them.

I have one hard drive, and three optical drives (cd±rw, dvd-rom, dvd±rw)I intend to continue using all the optical drives to reduce use of the dvd±rw drive, I won't be doing any burning on the fly, and the devices are to be connected to and older 440BX motherboard.

I was wondering what would be the best setup the the devices on the IDE channels. I was thinking:

    Primary IDE: hard drive (master)
    Primary IDE: dvd rom (slave)
    Secondary IDE: dvd±rw (master)
    Secondary IDE: cd±rw (slave)

If this setup seems flawed or there is a better configuration could someone let me know.

There is nothing wrong with the setup you've slated for. The only thing I would keep in mind would be the positioning for usage. By that, I mean if you have two disc drives that will be used frequently and they are positioned in your casing on top of one another, heat could become an issue.

If you have four drive bays in your case I would space the one that would be most used from the other two. Like so...

    [DRIVE] MOST USED
    [EMPTY]
    [DRIVE]
    [DRIVE]
