I am new to this and I understand the difference between dvd5 and dvd9 but I don't know how to tell if I am using dvd 5 or 9. how do I find out?
well, generally speaking, all store bought dvd's (hollywood movies)are pretty much dvd9, and all "regular" blank media you purchase is dvd5~ you can distinguish usually by dvd5 = 4.7gb when seen on the label/wrapper of the disc or on your computer. the DL media in stores (dual layer/double layer) = 8.5gb which make them dvd9 discs~ hope that helps a lil bit docTY~
yes, you could very much do FULL UNCOMPRESSED dvd backups using DL media (dvd9) without having to use dvd shrink~ if you are considering that route, i strongly suggest you get the Verbatim (made in singapore on the wrapper) dvd+r DLs~ they are simply the best dvd9 media available at this point in time...i've also had a lot of success with Ridata Ritek dvd+r DLs, but others on here have not been so lucky~ also, i use dvd decrypter..ISO READ--ISO WRITE for my DL (dvd9) backups...i've found the program to be quite good/effective on my now 200+ backups on dvd+r DL (dvd9) media~ docTY~
also clonedvd 2 with anydvd is a great program ,you will need anydvd with dvd decrypter if your going to do the newer movies anyway. clonedvd 2 and anydvd have a free 21 day trial and dvd decrypter is freeware you can download the program from this link and use the guides http://bbmayo.home.comcast.net/ remember the DL media(DVD-9) is going to run you at least 2 bucks a dvd if you can find it on sale where as the SL(DVD-5) is going to be about 30 to 40 cents each so something to consider
There's lots of dvd-5 originals out there.Napoleon Dynamite and SuperCross comes to my mind as dvd-5s. Usually the cheaper "B" movies. No scence in using dl media for a dvd-5 original. You can use dvd shrink to tell you if it's a dvd-5 or dvd-9. Let it analyze and open up the movie files. Look at the compression tab.If it says 100,then it's a dvd-5. When I encounter a dvd-5,simple dvd decypter mode ISO read and ISO write will do the job quicker. That mode is for non-compressed/1:1 copy using dvd-5 to dvd-5 or dvd-9 to dvd-9. On dvd-9's,dvd shrink will give you 50-80,meaning they will have to be compressed or backup main movie only.To interpret those numbers,80 means the backup will be compressed at 20%. I take out the extra crap like: Languages/director's commentary/bonus footage/and anything else i can and most of my single layer backups at at 100%-no compression.Dvd shrink can take out all that stuff to help get compression to a minimum. The AEC enhancements are also sweet in case you want all the extra stuff left in.
