Sorry to post this kind of thread, I know there are a lot out there. But I have searched through similar threads and have been unable to fix my problem on my own.

I am relatively new to burning and have been getting numerous "DVD burn failed" messages. There does not seem to be a pattern to it, errors appear at different times during the burn process. I have tried changing media and am currently using Verbatim DVD+R 16x RW. I have played around with different burn speeds from 2x-16x to no avail. I use DVD Shrink to back-up the DVDs. My success rate is about 50%. My memory usage is typically around 50-60%. Could this be a factor? I have read some threads about change firmware but to my understanding my DVD burner (SONY DVD RW DW-Q30A) does not have specific firmware. I did see one post about a combination of two types can act as a substitute but I am hesitant to mess with that if it is not an issue. Below is my most recent log. Any kind of feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Here is a new firmware, I don't know what you mean by the sony not having a specific firmware. That sony is a rebadged liteon 1635s. Here is a newer firmware:

    http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/dvdrw/stock/Sony.Q30A.YYS2.stock.rar

YOu could also try not burning to 4465, try to not go further than 4300MB.

I think the updated firmware might fix some probs, no guarentee though.

I was mistaken. I read on a different post of someone with the same burner looking for new firmware and they were told nothing was available. They have since posted what you said where the sony is equal to the liteon 1635s. I updated the firmware and my first burn worked fine, which is promising. I will wait see with other burns if that improves the performance. Thanks for the link and help.

I've updated the firmware and decreased the file size for the burn as suggested and I am still having trouble burning. The success rate is about 50% or lower. I've pasted the latest burn log below. I can't figure what else to try. Should I suspect my hardware? Any suggestions are appreciated.

In my opinion this is too fast, should be around 4X.

I will keep that in mind for future burns but I have had equally bad performance on 2x and 4x. I have played around with different speeds and file sizes and have had about the same outcome whether it is 2x or 16x. I’m stumped on this one.

I was having problems as well with Nero 6 in fact if i tried now with Shrink and auto to Nero it would get so fat then fail in the burn stage regardless of speed.

My solution was to use Shrink and save to file. Open Nero and import files and then burn worked well at 4 x and 8 x and even 16x without any failures, even worked on the cheaper media as well

@Marty, I am sure somewhere you were advised of the perils using CRAP media and burning too fast(in excess of 4X) but you are NOW here stating that you have ignored our advice.

No doubt we, or I will remember this statement when next you post a problem.

No i didnt ignore the advice, the point i was making was it wasnt a media or a speed issue that was causing my fault / s

So far i havnt found why it played up but in manual rip and burn it works perfect and the poor media and speed havnt made it worse.

I agree 4x is the sensible speed but in my case the speed and disc quality after getting Verbatim discs later on, i found that the cheap discs also worked and i could get good burns at 8x if i was inclined to do so.

I wasnt ignoring your very helpful advice but simply pointing out that the advice that was given did not solve my problem, in fact im sure the original problem may still be lurking around, but hey it now gives me correct results so im pleased.

Thanks for all your help but chill out i wasnt ignoring the advice but im afraid on this occasion the advice made absolutely no difference to me.

Thanks and i hope you will be able to assist again if needed

Thanks for the suggestion but that is how I have been doing it. Originally I used the immediate burn option with shrink but I stopped when I received all of the failures. I started to burn from the saved file on the HD with Nero to try and isolate the problem to see if it might be shrink or Nero. The burns fail regardless of the process. I have a few more things to play around with and I will post the logs to see if they offer any insight.
