I just got Nero 6 and burned a DVD using Nero Start Smart. I burned VCD files (VTS..VOB)to a DVD-R and all seemed to go well. But it doesn't play; not in Nero or a DVD player. All I get is the default menu page. It looks to me like somehow I missed indexing it so that a DVD player can read it and play it. I spoke too soon. The DVD I burned plays fine in my PC with Nero; it also plays in an older DVD player I have. My newest one, however, won't play it. It just doesn't load at all. This DVD player specs include DVD-R and DVD-RW formats. (I burned to DVD-R.) This DVD player has always played regular DVD's OK. My question there is whether there is anything I might try in the burning process to make it readable? I realize there isn't much info here to go on, and it looks on the surface like my DVD player could be the problem. But I suspect I'm not burning optimally, and would like any suggestions as to what might be going on. Thanks.
My suggestion to you to optomize compatability with backups, would be to invest in some DVD+R blanks and booktype them. When you booktype, the information is written to disc in such a way that it fools your standalone DVD player into thinking it is reading a DVD-ROM (store bought movie).

This overwrites parts of the DVD that contains information about the disc. When the booktype field (bitsetting) is changed to DVD-ROM then DVD players are fooled and will think the user has put in a DVD-ROM disc instead of a DVD+R disc and will read it accordingly. This results in an increased chance that the player is able to read the disc and that’s why the ability to change the booktype field (bitsetting) is essential to a lot of users. Certainly owners of a DVD player that requires this field to be set to DVD-ROM, in order to work properly, will prefer a DVD recorder that supports setting the booktype field.
