Neither of my DVD burners are seeing blank DVDs. They see blank CD-R, they read burnt CD-R, burnt DVD, original DVD but not verbatim DVD+R, verbatim DVD-R, Ridata DVD-R (all 4.7) or Ridata DVD-R 8.5. I have re-installed by removing IDE drivers, CD/DVD drivers and disconnecting drives. I have used all the media before with great success. The only new software was a game burnt to disc (HW Thunder Box) and a program called Game Butler (for use with the game). I have removed both programs completely, same problem. I have updated firmware. Drives are Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7190A, and Phillips SPD2413BM/17. Both drives are approx 2/3 months old, with about 150 burns on sony, 15 burns on phillips. Any ideas???? I am stumped, but dont think a new drive will solve the problem, I am missing something somewhere, just need someone to point me in the right direction.
Step three might apply to this situation. It entails removing programs that can burn DVD's and cleaning out the registry. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...uct=3377275&docname=c00817052#bph07146_filter
I followed the instructions and changed the registry. I used nero to burn a data dvd, but when I tried to burn a dvd use nero vision, it said my blank disc was full (not enough room) for the operation. I then got a strange "cant read from memory" message? So, I think the problem is with nero (which I have removed and re-installed 3 times now), but when right click on dvd drive with blank in it, I see 0 free space, 0 used, ie no media. Any other ideas? It is strange that I burnt a data dvd, but cant burn a video dvd....nero vision at fault? I am totally clueless. Just to note, I have multiple dvd programs on my pc, dvd decrypt, dvd labs, dvd shrink etc. Maybe they are conflicting with each other. I am almost tempted to transfer files to third HDD and start a clean XP install......
The problem addressed in the link (as I see it) is that these programs each try to assert priority for use of the burner and removing these programs, then cleaning the registry, is what resets everything back to normal. You could boot into safe mode and try Nero again - when only a minimum of processes are running.
I wanted to test the DVD drives, so I installed xp on a third drive I had laying around, did a minimal install, burned a DVD video fine. So, problem is definitely associated with what was said in last post, software conflict somewhere. If I can narrow it down further, I will update the thread.
I have heard that alcohol 120% conflicts with other programs, if you have that 1 you could start there. bean55
Attar, Thanks for the posts. You just resolved my visit. I had installed, DVDShrink, DVDDecypter, ritit4me, Fixvts and DVD Fab. Now I have deleted Fixvts and DVD Fab (but kept the other three) and after using the registry cleaner on both "Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal" and "System Suite 2000 by OnTrack" (I believe they are both free) and the registry defrag on the System Suite 2000, too, I am again able to open a blank disk! Thanks again I had no idea what was going on! I was considering buying a new burner!!!
I spoke to soon. With Sony's dvd-r, it reads ot insert a disk. (It's in there). With Verbatium's dvd+r it reads, F:\is not accessable, incorrect function. Not only that but it refers to it as a cd drive!
Try removing all burning programs. Remove the upper filters (if present). Put a DVD containing data into the drive and use Windows Explorer to read the files (XP always lists the drive as a 'CD'). If it can't see the files on the disk, go to the drive (right click, 'Properties', 'Recording' and uncheck 'Enable cd recording' then turn it on again. If it still cannot see the files, try uninstalling the IDE channel that the drive is connected to - usually the secondary - this reinstalls the drivers - guides for this are on Afterdawn - http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/520767 Good luck.
