    Hello guys!

I have a LG dvd burner and have had it for over a year and never a problem...was trying to burn something earlier today and while in the dvd burning program I quickly clicked abort about 4 seconds into the session and then the computer started acting slow...so i manually pressed the dvd rom button and got the blank dvd out manually... and now anytime I try putting a blank DVD into the drive it says "BLANK CD"...i've tried a whole bunch of empty DVD's but it simply won't recognize them...someone help me!!!

    What program were/are you using?

Is your burner listed as a DVD RW in the My Computer window?

If you insert a commercial DVD does it play correctly?

If you attempt to burn a DVD, does the program do it or does it generate an error message.

    I was using DVD-cloner 3.

It's listed as DVD-RAM Drive in My Computer.

Yes it does recognize normal DVD's.

Well my friend...as soon as I pop in an empty dvd into the burner it says "empty CD..blah blah what would you like to do etc etc" then those options come up...and then when I look in my computer it shows it as a CD...also yes in the program when I insert a blank DVD it says please insert a blank Dvd...

did you try to reboot the computer...... this should set the settings back to normal. I noticed that sometimes my computer does that same thing.... showing my blank DVD as a CD Drive! but that doesn't stop the program from burning to the disk! If you are getting non recognition of your disk, totally, where it won't burn the DVD at all then I would check if it slipped into PIO mode and reset to DMA:

Under Primary IDE Channel it says:
    Device 0
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5

    Device 1
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if available
    Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable

For the Secondary IDE Channel...the Device 0 and Device 0
specifications are the same as "Device 1" under Primary IDE Channel.

    any suggestions guys?

    Thanks in advance

PS I did try to reboot but doesn't work..

I also have 2 primary and 2 secondary.

    Primary device-top:Device 0 and 1 are UDMA5
Lower primary: device 0 and 1-dma if available

    Secodary-Top;Device 0 is UDMA2/device 1 dma if available.
Secondary-lower: Dma if available for device 0 and 1

I have dual harddrives on my primary, and dual dvd-rw drives on my secondary.

As long as none of those controllers say Pio mode, you should be ok.

I've got another pc that sometimes gives me that issue of not recognizing blank media.

Try going back into device manager, under Dvd/cd rom drives. Open up your burner that is at issue/click drive tab/uninstall drivers/and reboot.

That fixed my pc twice now. Something about dvd decrypter's ISO mode on that pc and throws it out of whack, making it look like a cd-rw drive.

From what you are telling us it still recognizes DVD's and My Computer has it as DVD RAM.

    Try re-installing DVD-cloner 3....

That would be my educated guess...The app flaked out on ya!

    Good luck!

Have you tried any other apps like DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, or Nero for backing up and burning?

Alright guys thanks for your posts...umm...so what you guys are saying is that i should just uninstall and reinstall the program and see what happens?

but how do you explain that in "My Computer" it sees the blank DVD as an empty CD? You think by reinstalling the program ...that would make a difference in my computer detecting a blank DVD?

Thanks for your help guys..keep it up!

    1) Drive is lost, usually uninstall drivers and rebooting takes care of it.

    2) Could be the programs you are using

    3) Your dvd-rw drive may need a firmware update. It's not programmed to handle how to burn your media.Usually happens when you switch: Format/speed rated/different quantity/or even swiching to another case pk-spindle of the same quantity.Any of those changes, and the MID code on your blank changes. Your burner's firmware reads that MID code and it tells it how to burn to that MID code.If it's not listed on the firmware, then it'll kick it out by recognizing it as a cd.

    4) Drive may be shot!

Try to find the latest update for that drive and update it.

I got a reply from the manufacturer of the DVD-Rom drive and they instructed me to do the following:

" 2. Connect the drive to the secondary IDE channel as a master drive with no other devices connected to that channel. Also disconnect any other optical drives connected to the computer. Start Windows and verify it can recognize the drive. "

They told me I need to update the firmware...I understand all the steps but this one? can anyone tell me how to do this step by step? Thanks in advance.

LG firmware can be found here:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=16

Just locate your burner model number and download the latest firmware listed. Sometimes the downloads are archives that need opening with WinRAR (free download), sometimes not. If there is an .exe file open that and help it find the burner if necessary and then OK the flash. If it requires another program, there is usually a readme with instructions.

How do I do this? Before I do what you say don't I have to do this first?

Yes that would be a good idea. You won't be able to update the firmware unless your system can recognize the drive. The burner may already be on the secondary channel anyway. That just where it's supposed to be and is usually located.

The primary channel should be the one your hard drive is on. The secondary channel would be the IDE cable your hard drive isn't on. Trace the cable from your hard drive to the motherboard. The slot it's going into on the motherboard should be the primary channel. There should be a second connecter on the motherboard right next to that one. That is the secondary channel and the cable from that slot should be the one your burner is on. They are suggesting you disconnect any other CD ROM or DVD drives you might have connected other than the DVD burner.

You'll have to look at the drive's documentation to see how to set master. Usually they can be set master, slave, or smart select. Just check the documentation supplied with your drive or online at the LG site.

On the other hand if the firmware updater locates your burner and updates the firmware, then your burner is obviously recognizable by your system. If the firmware updater cannot locate the drive, then something is wrong.

If you have Nero Startsmart, start it up and see whether it gives you both DVD and CD choices. Also the drive menu should list all the devices available which would be CD. DVD, and image recorder. The labeling of the drive as a CD-ROM doesn't mean anything by itself. Most of my drives switch from DVD to CD whenever a blank is inserted. That's because Windows doesn't really have any native support for DVD burning, only CD burning. That's why we have to use all these third party programs. If it'll burn or read a DVD, it's working.
