We've been backing up our dvd collection and just had to get new dvd+r media. The first set of dvd+r were memorex 4x speed which is the same speed as our burner. I got a small pack of maxell 8x to try out as we could not find any 4x. The dvd's will copy just fine but when we try to play them to make sure they are ok they freeze up. My question .... and it may be dumb, but.... does the dvd burner have to be the same or greater speed as the media you are burning to? IE: if you have 8x media do you have to have an 8x or higher speed burner? Thanks
If you're doing this to back up then don't use memorex. After a year or two you will have to redo. Buy either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.
Rule of thumb, use quality media (the maxell's should be much better than the memorex's unles you got lucky and the memorex's were made by ritek), keep your firmware up to date, and burn video at half the rated speed of the media (burn 8x rated media at 4x etc.). Most any media will work for backing up files but for video reproduction you need good, proven, high quality media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, maxell, sony mij, fuji mij (mij = made in japan), branded ritek ridata, Stay away from memorex, HP, phillips, no name, and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa.
Thanks for your responses. I will try the media brands suggested. We also have some TDK-RW discs. I tried those once and it's as though nothing will burn to them. It says it's burning but the disc is blank when completed. Is there a secret to using re-recordable discs? Thanks again!!!
